As a Part-Time Adult Mental Health Support Services Counselor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will play a pivotal role in supporting individuals facing serious mental illnesses, substance use disorders, or emotional impairments. Your diverse responsibilities include conducting needs assessments, providing advocacy, and implementing crisis intervention strategies to ensure clients maintain their community placements. You will deliver comprehensive independent living skills training and facilitate engaging recreational and leisure activities, all while offering compassionate, supportive counseling in a mental health residential setting.

Additionally, you will monitor and document client progress, ensuring that each individual receives tailored support that fosters their recovery and promotes a healthy, fulfilling life. Your contributions will be essential in guiding our clients toward successful and empowered living.

To excel as a Part-Time Adult Mental Health Support Services Counselor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will need a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, such as Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling, along with a minimum of one year of experience providing behavioral health services to adults with serious mental illness or emotional impairments. Registration with the Board of Counseling as a Qualified Mental Health Professional - Adult (QMHP-A) is essential for practicing in this role. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are crucial for building rapport with clients and effectively addressing their needs.

Additionally, proficiency in relevant software and tools will enhance your ability to monitor and document client progress accurately. A valid Driver's License is required, as your role may involve transporting clients, emphasizing the importance of reliability and a commitment to their well-being.

The knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services such as Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling
  • Registered with the Board of Counseling as a QMHP-A
  • At least one year of experience providing behavioral health services to adults with serious mental illness or emotional impairments.
  • Valid Driver's License
