Job Description
Victim Assistance- Provides direct services to victims of crime for the Madison County Sheriffs Department and is available to assist other local agencies upon request.
Responsible for all aspects of the program designed to provide physical and emotional assistance and support to crime victims. This can include but is not limited to assisting victims with filing orders of protection, compensation claims, crisis intervention, court support, case status information, community referrals, and community awareness.
This is a grant-funded position from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute with the possibility of renewal.
Responsibilities
FOLLOW-UP CONTACT: Phone clients to determine their needs and provide referrals and case status information.
CRISIS INTERVENTION: Available for on-call rotation for crisis intervention for sexual assault, domestic battery, and other situations when victims need emotional support, advocacy, and information.
TRANSPORTATION: Transport clients to the station, shelter, and court.
COURT ACCOMPANIMENT: Accompany clients to court hearings weekly and to protective order hearings as needed.
DOCUMENTATION: Must be able to provide detailed written documentation of case notes and services rendered to the Victim Assistance Coordinator.
TRAINING: Attend conferences/seminar meetings as the Victim Assistance Coordinator requested.
MEETINGS: Attend staff meetings and Multidisciplinary Team Meetings
SPECIAL PROJECTS: Assist the Agency with special projects and events as needed upon request from the Victim Assistance Coordinator.
RELATIONSHIPS: Must be able to establish and maintain a professional working relationship with referral sources such as local law enforcement officers, prosecuting attorneys, probation officers, court personnel, local advocates, and other social service agencies.
Job Requirements
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
A bachelors degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, or a similar field is preferred; however, individuals working toward a degree or with prior related experience may be considered.
Valid Drivers license and demonstrates safe driving record.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Interpret and explain policies, procedures, and relevant laws.
Conduct needs assessments and provide appropriate community referrals.
Communicate effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Make public presentations.
Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
Work emergency callouts, nights, weekends, and holidays during rotation.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
Ability to maintain accurate records
Ability to work in stressful situations.
Strong communication skills and ability to provide non-judgmental support.
Maintaining a high degree of professionalism, including dressing in a business-casual manner, punctuality, and the positive promotion of victim services.
The ability to effectively communicate with law enforcement, court officials, co-workers, attorneys, and the public during potential conflicts.
Ability to utilize standard office equipment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (but Not Required)
Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.
Experience working with victims of domestic/sexual assault or experience public service.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal domestic violence service systems, policies, and issues.
