Job Opening - College Counselor

This is a regular full time, 10.5 month college counselor position with approximately 30-40 assigned students per grade level.

This position reports to the Director of College Counseling.

Duties/Responsibilities

(Note: The following list of responsibilities is not exhaustive. Others may be assigned, subject to reasonable accommodations.)

  • Conduct individual college counseling sessions with junior and senior students and their parents to discuss and formulate supportive post-secondary plans within assigned student grade level caseload.
  • Lead the Brebeuf Jesuit Ignatian Scholars Student Program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: candidate recruitment and selection, collaboration with school & community-based partners, development of curriculum & teaching in classroom environment, engaging in developmentally appropriate leadership skill building.
  • Lead development of program planning throughout the year, including, but not limited to, August College Application & Essay Workshop for Seniors, grade-level parent programs, college bus trip, college fairs, annual update of the School Profile, etc.
  • Responsible for coordinating: Spring School Day ACT and Fall School Day SAT. This entails communication of the test administration to students and families, organizing test room setup, proctor assignments, etc. in accordance with both ACT and College Board testing terms and guidelines, and working with the SSD Coordinator to provide testing accommodations to all eligible students.
  • Commitment to discerning the priorities of student needs and addressing appropriately.
  • Serve as a general resource for students, parents, and faculty regarding admissions criteria, college data, and career exploration opportunities.
  • Prepare recommendation letters and secondary school reports. Provide guidance to ensure students are presenting themselves and Brebeuf Jesuit in the highest regard.
  • Collaborate with School Counselors to provide a four-year program of advising and support to assigned students to meet their academic and growth goals.
  • Teach sophomore students in College Counseling Seminars.
  • Establish and maintain productive and successful relationships with college admission representatives. Articulate Brebeuf Jesuit’s program of study and services to college admission officers to support the school’s commitment to excellence.
  • Visit colleges and universities to become familiar with their programs, services, and admission policies.
  • This position includes travel to college campuses and attending professional development programs when approved by the supervisor.
  • Proctor Advanced Placement (AP) exams.
  • Provide guidance and support to faculty in writing letters of recommendation.
  • Collaborate with English faculty on instruction for juniors in writing their college essays.
  • Prepare presentation templates for parent and group program information meetings.
  • Attend training and development pertaining to post-secondary counseling and student mental health.
  • Maintain active involvement in local, state, and national professional college admission organizations.
  • Align services and programs to meet the ethical and professional standards in accordance with the principles of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and reflect the values of Jesuit education.
  • Participate in online certification programs which require a time commitment outside of the school day.
  • Capacity to interpret career and interest assessments, including but not limited to Myers Briggs, YouScience, and iStartStrong.

Required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Sensitivity to and appreciation for diversity, with demonstrated ability to relate to individuals with compassion, dignity and respect.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and responsively in a supportive team environment within Counseling and the Brebeuf faculty & staff.
  • Excellent writing, speaking and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in use of technology as it applies to college counseling.
  • Ability to work as part of a team but manage own responsibilities with minimal oversight.
  • Experience in postsecondary counseling in a high school or within a college admission office.
  • Capacity to participate in departmental evening group programs on postsecondary advising

Preferred

  • Masters degree in School Counseling or related Counseling field
  • Experience in youth leadership development with an emphasis in career exploration and/or leadership skill development
  • Prior experience with relevant counseling programs such as SCOIR and related college and career readiness software programs
  • Experience in Google, Gmail and G-Suite Productivity Software
