About Job

The school counselor, under moderate supervision, performs intermediate-level work with limited decision-making discretion promoting student success, providing preventive services, and responding to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic and social development for all students. Employee performs school-based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Adhere to NC Professional School Counselor Standards
  • Utilize data to design, deliver, and communicate a comprehensive school counseling program based on the NC Essential Standards for school counselors
  • Appropriately use assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services
  • Counsel student individually or in small groups for specifically identified needs within the domains of developing academic, personal/social, and career plans
  • Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals
  • Incorporate life skills into programs that students will need to be successful long-term
  • Develop and maintain a written plan for the effective delivery of the school counseling program on the NC Comprehensive School Counseling standard course of study
  • Implement an effective referral and follow-up process
  • Conduct a yearly audit of the school's comprehensive counseling program to review implementation and effectiveness; collect and analyze student data to guide program improvements
  • Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitate appropriate interventions
  • Respond to and support efforts to stabilize student crisis situations on an individual or school-wide basis
  • Maintain current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and relevant stakeholders individually and in small groups to foster academic success for students
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents and outside agency personnel to support the whole child
  • Attend professional development and other meetings as required
  • Perform safety functions/drills to maintain a safe instructional environment. Take all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, standards, and expectations of school counseling
  • Comprehensive knowledge of how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
  • Skilled in communication, both verbal and written
  • Skilled in computers and software including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to instructional practice and business needs
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in school counseling, or degree in equivalent field with add-on school counseling licensure from an accredited college or university required
  • Completion of school counseling internship required
  • Valid NC schooling counseling certification, or ability to obtain, required
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
