Job Description:Tis job posting is for the 2025-2026 school yearRioTECH190-day contractSchool CounselorMinimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in guidance and counseling from a regionally accredited college or university; and
  • New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) PreK-12 School Counselor License.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Software or related software;
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; and
  • Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and visitors while remaining professional, polite, and courteous.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate local School Counseling Program in accordance with standards set forth by the NMPED State Plan and commensurate with the local system plan;
  • Implement the individual site School Counseling Program Curriculum (if applicable);
  • Provide individual, group counseling, and classroom guidance through the development of personal, social, educational and career plans;
  • Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians teachers and staff about understanding and meeting the needs of students and make appropriate school and community referrals;
  • Participate in activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school;
  • At the secondary level: monitor progress toward meeting graduation requirements and provide academic advisement, to include creation of student schedules. Completion of Next Step Plans (Grades 8-12);
  • Provide school orientation/education for new students, parents/guardians, and faculty;
  • Provide appropriate appraisal services to assist teachers, parents/guardians, and students;
  • Administer student interest inventories (when appropriate) and interpret test results to provide students with information about educational, career, and personal/social interest/aptitude;
  • Assist with placement and follow-up services for students;
  • Assist students in selecting programs of study to enhance career planning;
  • Provide information and resource services for students, parents/guardians and faculty;
  • Assist students in building positive self worth, developing healthy and positive decision-making, problem-solving and relationship skills;
  • Support the creation of FBA/BIPs with teachers, administration, parents/guardians and students to support appropriate student behavior;
  • Utilize community resources in addressing the needs of students and families;
  • Support identification of students' needs to determine appropriate curriculum/classroom lesson development;
  • Prepare and manage annual site budget pertinent to the Counseling Program, if applicable;
  • Maintain comprehensive records and consistently utilize log entries in Student Information System;
  • Develop Professional Growth Plan and demonstrate professional ethics and leadership;
  • Exhibit positive and productive relationship skills;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication;
  • Comply with local, state, and federal policies, and regulations, and laws affecting area of responsibility as well as the American School Counselor Association Code of Ethics;
  • Assist with high school graduation responsibilities, if applicable as per job assignment;
  • Assist students in identifying post-secondary options and experiences and activities related to these options;
  • Serve as site-based liaison to identify and support families identified under the McKinney Vento Act;
  • Serve as 504 Coordinators at the site level;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the competencies required by the NMPED for School Counselor Licensure and the ability to meet those competencies;
  • Comply with the ethical and professional guidelines promulgated by any board governing employee’s licensure;
  • Comply with state-approved New Mexico Administrative Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession and the RRPS Employee Standards of Conduct and upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations; and
  • Employee may be assigned other duties based on the needs of the District during the term of employment.
Contract Period: Based on assignment.Work Hours:Work hours are established in employment contract. Additional work hours may be assigned by the School Principal within the parameters of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.Application Procedure:The following documents must be attached to complete this application:
