General Purpose:
The Product Development and Material Informatics Scientist I contributes to the development of new materials and products that meet customer requirements.
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities that are requirements in order to perform the job:
- General:
- Demonstrates creativity in solving problems
- Develops an area of expertise for which peers seek guidance
- Runs equipment
- Implements established safe work practices, provides expertise when participating in safety reviews
- Records experimental work accurately and maintains up-to-date records
- Proactively seeks advice from internal/external resources for technical approaches and safe work practices
- Applies statistics and other data-driven models to analyze data
- Contributes to the design and implementation of capital projects
- Contributes to the development of new technologies
- Contributes to project status reports/presentations as appropriate
- Demonstrates commitment, dependability and respect with regular attendance and punctuality
- Product Development (80-90%):
- Participates in customer facing projects
- Plans and conducts experiments to demonstrate new concepts
- Delivers feasibility samples and pre-production prototypes for customer evaluation
- Documents procedures and validates test methods
- Material Informatics (10-20%)
- Provides material informatics analysis for designing new materials and optimizing material performance
Supportive Functions:
In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of supportive functions based on business needs:
- Maintains good housekeeping and resolves any identified safety issues in all work areas
- Orders supplies needed to complete work processes
- Assists with waste disposal
- Maintains awareness of how the position supports the Quality Management System, and participates in quality related activities such as audits and quality improvement teams as necessary
- Participates in safety program activities and presentations
- Prepares materials for shipment to customers
- Maintains company website
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Proficiency in statistical analysis software such as Minitab and machine learning programming language such as Python
- Motivated and results oriented
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Good attention to detail and keen observation skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain thorough, accurate records
- Ability to multitask
- Action oriented
Education/Experience Guidelines:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field; a minor or significant coursework in Computer Science preferred
- 0-3 years of related experience
- Experience with monomer synthesis, polymer synthesis or formulation development
- Experience applying materials informatics and machine learning to new product development
