About Job

The University of Iowa Community Clinics (UICC) is seeking a patient-centered Assistant Nurse Manager to support our North Liberty Family Medicine/Pediatric Clinic/Psychology Clinics.

This position provides managerial and clinical leadership to assure that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods and resources to accomplish their performance objectives. This position has some involvement in direct patient care as well as planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs and research programs of clinical and health service departments. This position supports our UICC clinics and may travel between clinical sites to provide continued support.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction: Identify trends and determine QA priorities. Develop quality standards. Work with outpatient services Nursing Manager and the Administrator, UICC to appropriately allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectation. Collaborate with outpatient services Nursing Manager and the Administrator, UICC to develop, implement and monitor plan to enhance patient satisfaction. Formulates, reviews, and revises policies and other standards of professional practice essential for optimum delivery of patient service; assures compliance with established standards of care (practice and performance).
  • Patient Care/Services Delivery: Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams within Family Medicine, Pediatric, and Psychology locations. Identify needs, trends, and forecasts in order to provide quality patient care. Ensure appropriate staff schedules, assign and perform Charge assignments; provide direct patient care in Family Medicine, Pediatric, and Psychology locations as needed/directed by Nursing Manager and the Administrator, UICC.
  • Planning and Goal Management: Interprets, communicates, implements and monitors goals and objectives articulated in the institutional, departmental and/or divisional strategic plan. Functions innovatively and looks beyond current reality to forecast future direction, takes risks, challenges traditional assumptions and solves problems creatively. Collaborate with outpatient services Nursing Manager and the Administrator, UICC to develop action plans that meet strategic goals; provide progress reports to outpatient services Nursing Manager and the Administrator, UICC.
  • Communication/Collaboration: Communicate with Advanced Practice Providers, LIPs, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the Urgent Care and Family Medicine care locations; communicate with patients, families and staff to address and resolve issues. Designs innovative models of care utilizing skills of the multidisciplinary team yielding efficient and effective outcomes. Facilitates multidisciplinary participation in the clinical problem identification and resolution processes; utilizes human resources data and budgetary information to formulate recommendation to outpatient services Nurse Manager and the Administrator, UICC Services. Builds and sustains relationships, resolves conflict, handles negotiation effectively, and develops collaborative working relationships.
  • Education Programs: Provide clinical education to develop staff competency. Oversee clinical education activities and agreements with other educational institutions and in conjunction with the Ambulatory Nursing Practice Leader and UICC Nursing Manager. Ensure staff compliances are applicable and complete.
  • Clinical Service/Unit Operations Management: Knowledge of and ability to manage effective and smooth operations within clinical outpatient units by utilizing various management principles and techniques.
  • Human Resources Management: In collaboration with the UICC Human Resources Manager, outpatient services Nursing Manager and the Administrator, UICC, hire, develop and manage the performance of staff within the services. Understand and apply appropriately the provisions of the collective bargaining agreements; assure staff is compliant with competencies, policies, procedures and regulations. Oversee the daily management of ELMS, including but not limited to approvals/denials, scheduling.
  • Financial Management: Actively help manage operating expenses for the Urgent Care and Family Medicine care locations; review with the Administrator, UICC financial reports and provide insights to budget variances; recommend budge ideas, resources and cost containment strategies. Motivates staff to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of university resources.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Understanding of the issues related to the decision-making process; ability to analyze situations fully and accurately and reach productive decisions.
  • Healthcare Regulatory Environment: Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare and clinical practices. Ensure all regulatory policies, protocols, guidelines and/or practices for are followed and/or met.
  • Performance Management: Ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance.

Supervision Received

  • Functional supervision is exercised over clinical outpatient services nursing staff (i.e., Staff Nurse, Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Clerks).

Percent of Time: 100%

Pay Grade: 5A https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/plans

Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, variable hours between 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM with limited, rotating off-shift/weekend coverage, clinical location could change based on the clinic needs/hours.

Availability to provide support to other clinics within a 2-hour radius required. Fleet Car provided. Paid drive time.

Location: North Liberty, IA and surrounding clinic locations including Corridor area (as needed)

EDUCATION REQUIRED

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required. Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES REQUIRED

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Job-related certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional certification body. If not currently certified must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam.
  • Driver's License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Minimum of 3 years recent nursing experience including leadership/management with demonstrated skills in management and supervision.
  • Demonstrates excellent time management, organization of workload, delegation, analytical, decision-making skills, attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Demonstrates collaboration and effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments.
  • Demonstrated effective teaching skills for staff and patient education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and other customers.
  • Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail, and thoroughness.
  • Experience in leading changes in nursing care based on systematic evaluation and evidence-based practice (EBP) model.
  • Experience with Nursing Research.
  • Role models professional practice and has reputation for clinical and service excellence.

HIGHLY DESIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, including the direct supervision of clinical staff.
  • Considerable primary care clinical experience (minimum 1 year).
  • Member/active participation in professional organization.
  • Previous ambulatory experience (clinical setting - minimum 1 year).
  • Previous experience leading joint commission survey readiness.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Previous education standardization of workflows/improvement process.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Previous healthcare experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of UI and UI Health Care policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Master's degree in nursing desired.
