Program: Suicide Prevention Services - 988 Lifeline
Location: In-Person at the Salinas or Santa Cruz office
Schedule: Multiple positions.
- 24 – 32 hours a week, Monday – Sunday, 8 am – 4 pm
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Be part of the watershed moment for behavioral health support, services and programs in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties. With the roll-out of 988, the National Suicide Prevention and Lifeline, Family Service Agency is committed to and passionate about building a robust crisis care response system across the country where everyone has access to information and training and someone to call, someone to respond, and a safe place to go for crisis care. We are eager to expand and are seeking an individual who can, with support from our team, facilitate the growth and continued transformation.
In addition to our accredited 24/7 988 Lifeline, our Suicide Prevention Services program provides a range of community education and outreach activities, as well as bereavement support services for those who have lost loved ones to suicide. We are poised to expand in the coming months and years and are seeking an individual who can, with support from our team, facilitate the growth and continued transformation of our services.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Suicide Prevention Service of the Central Coast operates the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties and is a critical point of contact for people in times of crisis, emotional distress, and staying safe and supported through thoughts of suicide.
Responders go through a two-week (40 hours/week) training covering different topics around active listening, suicide risk assessment, caller safety, cultural humility, call triaging, community resources referrals, working with families, working with youth, suicide loss survivors, and first responders. After training, Responders will support callers struggling with a wide array of mental health difficulties.
Successful completion of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Lifeline Responder Training is required. Candidates will be paid for SPS Responder Training hours.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responding professionally and consistently to texters/chatters in a wide range of situations.
- Offer crisis intervention, de-escalation, and emotional support to all texters/chatters.
- Acquire competency in text/chat protocols, electronic databases, as well as additional technological procedures.
- Establish effective record-keeping practices on the electronic database; enter text/chat records according to the procedure.
- Adhere to mandating reporting policy as outlined by state and local law.
- Respond to texts/chats using appropriate triage and time management and utilizing established procedures for intervention.
- Seek supervisory consultation from designated staff where indicated.
- Participate regularly in team meetings with Suicide Crisis Line staff and other staff responders for supervision, support, and debriefing.
- Attend routinely scheduled meetings as requested or required for Suicide Prevention Services.
- Adhere to HIPAA Privacy Standards Compliance
- Assist in the training process of new responders and volunteers.
- Manage and support text/chat flow in the online portal.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Maintain a high level of responsiveness and open communication with colleagues.

- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage with diverse communities in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties.
- Principles of cultural sensitivity, cultural awareness, and cultural humility.
- Organized and able to provide follow-through.
- Creative, outgoing, and takes initiative.
- Knowledge of all specific skills, including lethality, assessment, data collection, and call triage.
- Ability to read, analyze, and create call reports following agency guidelines.
- Interpersonal relationship-building skills, including the ability to interact with others positively and professionally.
- Ability to resolve or prevent interpersonal conflict.
- Communication skills with an emphasis on responsiveness, transparency, and honesty.
Requirements:
- Fluency in English.
- To qualify as a bilingual responder, fluency in Spanish.
- Must live in Santa Cruz, Monterey or San Benito County or surrounding county.
- Must have gone through the SPS Responder Training or 988 Lifeline training through an accredited agency.
- Punctuality and dependability.
- Ability to use sound and ethical judgment.
- Ability to pass a background check and TB clearance
Job Type: Full Time
Compensation: $22-$24/hour (8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.)
$25-$27/hour (8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.)
+$1 weekend differential
+$3 bilingual differential
Benefits:
