Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated the Police Social Worker (PSW) is a non-sworn, non-clinical support, professional position responsible for providing social service support to the Police Department and all members of the community. The Police Social Worker is available to members of the Police Department as well as members of the community as an assistance, information, and referral source.
The Police Social Worker acts as a liaison between the Police Department and the various social service agencies providing follow-up and monitoring of cases upon request from the Department. The Police Social Worker provides a coordinated community policing response with access to a variety of agencies to deal with severe personal and family problems signaled by recurring calls for police service.
The nature of this work requires considerable independence of action in the disposition of routine work matters. The Police Social Worker has the additional responsibilities for contributing to and conducting the future direction of the PSW role and assuming the lead role in presentations to command staff, city council and in public forums. Reports to the Chief of Police.
Responsibilities:
- Reviews client needs for referral to other social and mental health agencies, emergency shelters, financial assistance, and assistance with on scene crisis intervention.
- Conducts seminars and training sessions directed to community members and the police department on a variety of social issues to include domestic violence, child abuse related issues, financial hardships, homelessness, opioid addiction, various mental health issue and more.
- Assesses and identifies community needs and assists in development of plans to meet identified needs.
- Provides information and referral information for domestic violence issues, mental health issues, alcohol and drug issues, child and family issue and other social service issues.
- Attends community and committee meetings as a representative of the Police Department in an effort to establish collaborative relationships with the members and organizations of the community.
- Conducts home visitation and provides follow-up services to families as requested by police department’s personnel and other members of the community.
- Prepares detailed reports and correspondence as required.
- Maintains client confidentiality with respect to social services.
- Assist with coordination of training for department personnel as needed or requested.
- Operates standard office equipment such as personal computers, fax machines, data imaging devices, cellular phones, electronic copiers, and electric processing equipment.
- Performs all other work related to the position as required and assigned by Police Chief or designee.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or other social science related field supplemented with (5) years’ experience in the area of social science.
- Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or other social science related field preferred.
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provided the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the job as determined by the Patrol Captain or designee.
- Bilingual written and verbal skills, preferred.
- Possession of a valid Pennsylvania State Driver's License is required.
- Bilingual written and verbal skills with English/Spanish language fluency required.
- Must be able to satisfactorily pass drug screening, background investigation, polygraph, and meet all requirements of the Criminal History Records Act, Chapter 91 of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code.
- Experience using computerized equipment and software such as Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Earth, Google Maps, CODY, RMS, and other customized and varied computer programs.
