Then the Adoption Center Team at the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area may be a fit for you. As a Part-Time Adoption Center Team Associate, you will work as part of a team to help homeless animals find their best “furever” homes. You will be the face of our organization, professionally handling the public both at the Shelter, over the phone, and in email in matters of counseling, problem resolution, information, referrals and general humane education. You’ll also utilize your computer skills to help with record retention, monetary transactions, etc.
Essential / Critical Functions and Duties:
- Assists the public politely and courteously with both adoptions and surrenders.
- Counsels prospective adopters and makes decisions regarding routine adoptions in accordance with the policies of the Humane Society.
- Professionally and politely handles the public both in the office and over the phone in matters of counseling, problem resolution, information, referrals and general humane education.
- Treats animals humanely, with love and concern both on and off the job and transmits these values to others.
- Maintains files for all records regarding surrender and adoption of animals including but not limited to temperament test files for each resident.
- Maintain census and inventory of all residents housed in the Shelter and ensure all adoptable animals are listed on the PetFinder website.
- Receives money for adoption and surrender fees, service fees and donations; all monetary transactions recorded on a daily ledger sheet.
- Prepare daily recaps of animals received and adopted.
- Provides accurate information and friendly service to the public.
- Assist potential adopters with the selection of pets and provides information about animals.
- Assists in the education of the public about responsible pet ownership at every opportunity through counseling or by providing appropriate literature and referrals.
- Return all items to their proper locations when through using them.
- Regularly participates in staff meetings to share ideas and suggestions for improvement of the Humane Society.
- Assist with keeping the Shelter, front desk and adoption counseling rooms neat and clean.
- Perform other duties as required by management to insure a positive public image and to improve the functioning of the organization

Job Specifications:
- Lifting: Must be able to lift supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Standing/Walking: Up to 75% of shift.
- Sitting: Up to 75% of shift.
- Reaching: Must be able to reach above head to handle supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Bending/Stooping: Must be able to bend down to handle animals in cages at floor level.
- Pushing/Pulling: Must be able to push or pull an animal weighing from several pounds up to 120 pounds.
- Math Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic functions accurately.
- Communication: Must have excellent communication and public relation skills.
- Administrative Skills: Experience with administrative tasks preferred.
Other:
- Valid operator’s license required.
- Animal handling and/or previous animal health/welfare preferred.
- Willingness to attend training programs to upgrade and maintain skill level.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- This is a non exempt position.
