ABOUT THIS POSITION


The Law Department consists of three divisions: The City Attorney’s Office, the City Prosecutor’s Office, and Management Services. This position is part of the Victim Services Unit in the Prosecutor’s Office. The Prosecutor’s Office prosecutes misdemeanor crimes that occur within the city of Phoenix. Some examples of these crimes are: DUI, domestic violence, indecent exposure, assault, and criminal damage.

The Victim Services Unit performs both critical and/or legally mandated functions related to victims’ rights such as sending victim notification letters, ensuring victims have court escorts, and emergency services are available and provided to victims.

The Victim Advocate II assists and provides court related services to victims of violent crime that includes domestic violence, assault, vehicular serious injury, and secondary victimization. This position explains victim’s rights, provides safety planning, and explains investigative and criminal justice procedures. They will interact with judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, detectives, patrol officers, and/or other governmental agencies and will need to prioritize duties based on court date and hearing status.

The essential duties include:

  • Reading, interpreting, and ensuring compliance with victims’ rights laws.
  • Contacting victims by phone and explaining victims’ rights and the judicial system.
  • Assessing victim’s needs and making appropriate referrals to other agencies.
  • Escorting victims to Court to testify and/or to obtain a protective order.
  • Providing emergency financial referrals (e.g. food boxes, utility assistance).
  • Assisting victims in establishing safety plans.
  • Acting as a liaison between prosecutor and victims.
  • Managing and prioritizing a large victim caseload under very tight time constraints.
  • Maintaining case logs and documenting case activities in a case management system.
  • Providing back-up coverage to team members and other areas as needed.

SALARY


Pay Range: $21.54 to $42.64 per hour.

Hiring Range: $21.54 to $33.41 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience in casework management, counseling, working with crime victims, or related activities.
  • Bachelor's degree in social work, human services, criminal Justice, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Working weekends and holidays may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Knowledge of Criminal Justice System or experience with legal proceedings.
  • Knowledge and experience with safety planning, victim's rights, court system, social services, trauma & secondary trauma.
  • Case management experience to include confidential cases and casework documentation.
  • Experience working with victims of crime in an advocacy field.
  • Experience providing:
    • Crisis intervention to vulnerable populations.
    • Customer service to a diverse population.
  • Spanish speaking (preferred but not required).
