Job Description and Duties

METROPOLITAN STATE HOSPITAL- Located in Norwalk, Los Angeles County

  • This position is limited term for 12 months. This position may be terminate at any time or may become permanent at a later date.


DSH-Metropolitan Forensic Services Department is accepting applications for one limited-term, full time Psychiatric Technician (PT).

Under the general direction of the Supervisor II, the Psychiatric Technician (PT) serves as an off-unit capacity as clinical staff; responsible for supervising patients in various contexts-escorting of patients to/from units to video conference rooms for virtual evaluation interviews, court hearings, and various video meetings required for the patient; provides escorting of forensic evaluators to conduct in-person patient evaluation interviews as needed; monitors patient behaviors during virtual proceedings; provides basic level of general and psychiatric nursing care; provides structures and maintains therapeutic milieu in collaboration with patients and staff; collects data and pertinent patient information for patient evaluation purposes; provides provision of care on Admissions Suite tasks when necessary.

The position requires knowledge of security procedures, public and property protection policies; fundaments of nursing care; general behavioral and psychiatric procedures; patient behavior and mental health principles and techniques involved in the care and treatment of patients or groups of mentally disordered patients; current first aid methods; medical terminology; pharmacology; cardiopulmonary resuscitation; management of assaultive behavior strategies; behavior response interventions; crisis response and management; hospital procedures and protocols.

The position requires the ability to learn and apply sound judgment for situations including the protection of persons and property; apply basic nursing knowledge, skills, and attitudes; establish effective therapeutic relationships with mentally disordered patients; recognize symptoms requiring medical or psychiatric attention; think and act quickly in emergencies; work with treatment teams to provide occupational, recreational, vocational, educational, and rehabilitative treatment planning programs for patients; follow directions; keep appropriate records; develop clear and concise reports of incidents; analyze situations accurately and take effective action.

Opened in 1916, DSH-Metropolitan State Hospital is in the vibrant community of Norwalk,15 miles east of Los Angeles. To the south are entertainment venues like Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, the marinas and beaches of Huntington, Newport and Laguna. To the west are Palos Verdes and Marina Del Rey. DSH-Metropolitan State Hospital has an open campus within a security perimeter. The hospital operates approximately 826 beds. The commitment categories of patients treated at DSH-Metropolitan: Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act, Incompetent to Stand Trial (PC 1370), Offenders with Mental Health Disorders (Penal Code Section 2964/2972/2974), Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (PC 1026).
