Position: Substance Use Disorder Counselor
Reports to: Program Manager

Function:
The Substance Use Disorder Counselor is responsible for screening, intake and orientation services, timely and accurate clinical documentation, case management, participation in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings, and conducting and documenting group education services.
Qualifications:
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree, Certified Addiction Counselor I or II, specialized training in addiction, and three (3) years’ experience working with chemically dependent individuals. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, a combination of documented other certification/education/training/experience may be substituted.
If recovering, the Counselor must have a minimum two-year’s continuous sobriety. The position requires a proven ability in both oral and written communication, case management and counseling theories. It requires a reasonable combination of the following knowledge and skills: work with addictive personality types; methods to intervene on substance abuse (including the use of cognitive behavioral therapies and twelve step facilitation skills); use of community resources; and an ability to serve as an appropriate role model.
Proficiency with common software and on-line applications is also required. Must possess a valid GA driver’s license and continually meet the requirements for VOASE’s vehicle insurance company.
Principal Activities:
- Respond to requests for services(s) by consumers via phone, in person and/or other type of referral.
- Schedule and conduct the screening, orientation, intake (and/or referral) services for prospective clients. Assure that all applicable documentation is completed timely and accurately.
- Coordinate services with referral agencies to assist consumers who have specific (treatment) needs not addressed by the program.
- Cooperate/coordinate with the A&QA Coordinator for the provision of diagnostic, medical, and registration documentation.
- Establish (in cooperation with the multidisciplinary treatment team) the consumers’ individualized treatment plan and weekly individual treatment planning.
- Cooperate/coordinate with the A&QA Coordinator for the provision of consumer encounters via APS.
- Actively participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings regarding the sharing of diagnostic, clinical, programmatic, treatment planning and discharge recommendations, services and documentation.
- Complete and maintain accurate and timely documentation of consumers’ progress/regression in the chart.
- Maintain formal written communication with referral sources regarding consumer services: i.e., probation/parole, DFACS, treatment facilities, hospitals, employers, etc.
- Maintain on-going educational and life skills group training sessions as scheduled/necessary covering all aspects of addiction treatment and recovery.
- Report any special need and or emergency that may arise to the Program Manager.
- Coordinate/cooperate with both the A&QA Coordinator and the Program Manager to assure the maintenance of complete and accurate consumer records and that these records are in compliance with APS, ORS and CARF standards and guidelines.
- Coordinate/cooperate with both the A&QA Coordinator and the Program Manager to assure that the program complies with licensing regulations/requirements and other regulating authority standards.
- Participate in weekly chart auditing, clinical supervision and curricula development meetings with the Program Manager.
- Maintain CPR, First Aid and CPI training.
- Maintain Certification via participation in on-going training.
- If an emergency arises and if available, assist the staff with group education services.
