Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is eagerly seeking to hire a part-time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to join our Adult Correctional Services team!

Adult Correctional Services (ACS) assists offenders with behavioral health or co-occurring disorders to access educational and discharge planning services while in the custody of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office. ACS services increase treatment compliance both in the jail and in the community, provides intensive re-entry services, reduces recidivism, and fosters a commitment to a drug-free, violence free, crime free lifestyle; reducing the need for inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, all while allowing individuals to live in the community with the highest degree of independence.

The ideal candidate would have a current VA Licensure as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner w/prescriptive authority & DEA number, and experience working with adults with mental health, substance use, and or co-occurring disorders especially in a state hospital, correctional setting or with the forensic population.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide psychiatric services to adult mental health and substance abuse population to include diagnosis and treatment of mental health/substance abuse problems.

  • Order and interpret laboratory tests and order EKGs for screening and for diagnosing.

  • Refer clients to appropriate medical and/or clinical services.

  • Prescribe appropriate psychotropic medication.

  • Prepare medical justification and documentation for clients to obtain prescribed medication in accordance with financial status; and assist clients in applying for patient assistance programs, department medication subsidy, obtaining sample medications and prescriptions, when approved, from pharmacy accounts.

  • Provide information, instruction, and counseling on health maintenance, health promotion, social problems, illness prevention and management, and medication use.

  • Manage patient caseload and provide documentation for medical direction and supervision, e.g., chart review, case review of patient care outcomes as required by the Virginia Board of Nursing and Board of Medicine.

  • Provide consultation and training to nursing, clinical and administrative staff.

  • Collaborate with physicians and other health professionals, as needed.

  • Receive clinical supervision, perform medical duties and prescribe medication under the supervision of the Medical Director or his physician designee and administrative supervision from the department supervisor.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires a Masters Degree in a nursing related field and a minimum of three (3) years experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing. Possession of a valid license as a nurse practitioner; certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; a nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority issued by the State of Virginia and possessing a DEA number within 90 days of being in position. Must have a current and valid drivers license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Preferences:

Experience working with adults with mental health, substance use and/or co-occurring disorders.
Experience conducting crisis assessments and providing intervention with adults.
Current VA Licensure as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner w/ prescriptive authority & DEA number.
Experience providing consultation and training to nursing, clinical and administrative staff.
Behavioral health experience in a state hospital, correctional setting, or with the forensic population.

Selected Candidate must be able to pass the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Department Unescorted Access Background Check and Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Background Check and Course.
