Overview
The School Mental Health Counselor will play a crucial role in promoting student well-being by providing counseling services, crisis intervention, and assessments. As a key member of our school community, this individual will collaborate with faculty, staff, parents, and students to create a supportive and healthy learning environment.
Responsibilities
- Reflect the Mission of The Gow School to students, faculty, and the community, and adhere to all company policies as listed in the Faculty and Employee Handbooks;

- Conduct mental health, behavioral, and risk assessments to identify students’ strengths, challenges, and support needs and develop appropriate intervention strategies.
- Provide individual and group counseling services to students experiencing emotional, social, or behavioral difficulties.
- Develop and implement intervention strategies to support students’ mental health and well-being.
- Collaborate with teachers, residential life staff, and administrators to develop individualized support plans.
- Assist in crisis management and intervention, providing immediate support to students and staff in times of distress.
- Work closely with parents and guardians, offering guidance and resources to help support their children.
- Design and implement programs that promote student mental health, resilience, and stress management.
- Offer professional development and training for faculty and staff on topics related to adolescent development, mental health, and behavioral strategies.
- Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, and professional standards in school psychology/counseling practices.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with school policies and confidentiality guidelines.
- Coordinate referrals to outside mental health providers and collaborate with community resources when appropriate.
Skills
- Master’s degree in School Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- State licensure or certification as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor or Licensed Master Social Worker required
- Experience working with adolescents, preferably in a school or boarding school setting.
- Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, learning disabilities, and mental health disorders.
- Willingness to engage fully in boarding school community life, including occasional evening or weekend responsibilities.
- Ability to assess and implement effective intervention strategies tailored to individual student needs.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse and inclusive educational environment.
- Experience with crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
- Respect for confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
- Strong knowledge of crisis management techniques and crisis intervention protocols.
- Competence in case management for students requiring ongoing behavioral health support within a school environment.
- Effective conflict management skills coupled with strong behavioral management strategies.
- Valid Driver’s License Required
Preferred Qualifications:·
- Experience working in a residential or boarding school setting.
- Familiarity with restorative justice practices, mindfulness techniques, or other SEL (social-emotional learning) frameworks.
- Training in trauma-informed care and culturally responsive practices.
Pay: $50,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
