Instituto Familiar de la Raza, Inc. is a multi-service community health and social service agency with an emphasis on serving the Chicano/Latino/Indígena community in San Francisco with a special focus on the diverse needs of the Mission District. Services include a wide range of mental health, HIV-related services, and social services, including health promotion, education, prevention, early intervention, case management, and psychological and psychiatric interventions, as well as cultural/social and spiritual re-enforcement. The agency serves children, youth, adults, and families. It has a rich history of working collaboratively with other agencies to meet the needs of the Chicano/Latino/Indígena community and other cultural/racial communities in San Francisco.

Job/Program Description

The La Clínica psychiatrist is responsible for providing high-quality, culturally responsive psychiatric services within a comprehensive, community-based behavioral-health program serving the Latine population in San Francisco. The psychiatrist conducts psychiatric evaluations, formulates diagnoses, develops and implements evidence-informed treatment plans that include medication management, and collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team to support holistic client care. The role requires strong clinical judgment, cultural humility, trauma-informed practice, and a commitment to integrated behavioral-health service delivery.

Essential Job Duties are but are not limited to the following

Psychiatric Evaluation and Diagnosis

  • Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic interviews, and mental-status examinations
  • Utilize culturally informed and trauma-responsive assessment practices to determine diagnostic impressions and treatment needs

Treatment Planning and Medication Management

  • Develop individualized, client-centered treatment plans that incorporate medication management and supportive therapeutic engagement
  • Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications in alignment with best practices, safety standards, and client goals
  • Engage clients in psychoeducation regarding psychiatric conditions, medications, risks, benefits, and alternatives

Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration

  • Participate in monthly La Clínica multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Collaborate closely with psychotherapists, case managers, program leadership, and other clinical staff to ensure coordinated and integrated treatment
  • Provide guidance on complex clinical situations and contribute to holistic care planning

Clinical Consultation

  • Offer consultation to La Clínica and agency staff regarding medication considerations, diagnostic questions, symptom management, and treatment planning
  • Serve as a psychiatric resource within the program and provide expert input for case reviews when needed

Clinical Documentation

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation, including psychiatric assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, progress notes, and medication records
  • Ensure all documentation meets agency standards, contractual requirements, and regulatory guidelines

Crisis Intervention and Risk Assessment

  • Provide crisis intervention, suicide-risk assessment, and stabilization support as clinically indicated
  • Assist the team in evaluating and managing client safety concerns and developing appropriate crisis plans

Coordination of Care

  • Collaborate with external medical and behavioral-health providers—including primary care physicians, medical case managers, and nursing staff—to ensure integrated, whole-person care
  • Participate in case conferences or inter-agency meetings as needed to support coordinated treatment

Family and Support System Engagement

  • When clinically appropriate and with client consent, confer with family members, significant others, and support networks regarding treatment recommendations, care coordination, and medication education

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Bilingual English-Spanish
  • At least two years of providing behavioral health services with an emphasis on working with the Chicano/Latino community
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of diversity in the Latino/Chicano community, especially around sexual orientation, culture, language, and gender
  • Evening and Saturday hours may be required

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Bicultural strongly preferred
  • Experience working with issues of immigration, social and structural barriers, and access to services in the Latino community
  • Experience and/or training in providing services to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals
  • Experience with community mental health settings
  • Experience and/or training in using various clinical models
  • Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSES

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree
  • Must be CA Licensed (with the Medical Board of California)

CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT

  • Must pass and maintain annual tuberculosis test
  • Must pass Department of Justice Fingerprint screening

Compensation And Benefits²

Salary:

This is a part-time position without benefits, with an hourly rate of $200.00

Commensurate With Work Experience, Qualifications, And Education

All full-time positions are based on a minimum of thirty-five (35) hours per week.

This is a part-time non-exempt position at 4-6 hours a week.

  • Ability to use public and/or private modes of transportation, duties are office-based, but travel to various off-site venues is required
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various types of weather conditions
  • On occasion must lift up to 35 lbs
