Advising Center Athletics
Academic Support Service for Student Athletes (ASSSA) is designed to assist student athletes with reaching their fullest academic and personal development while at the University of Pittsburgh. The University, Department of Athletics and ASSSA are committed to promoting both academic and athletic achievement of its student athletes, while upholding the academic integrity of the institution. The staff of ASSSA will work closely with coaches and faculty to help student athletes balance the demands of their academic responsibilities and participation in intercollegiate athletics.
ASSSA is seeking an Academic Counselor that will provide academic guidance for assigned team(s). The position will be an academic resource for student athletes and assist with scheduling classes, planning term work, choosing majors, formulating degree plans, and implementing individual academic plans each semester. The Academic Counselor will communicate academic progress and any relevant issues related to student athletes to coaches, Deans, Directors and administrators. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges student athletes face and the ability to provide holistic support that integrates both academic and athletic success.
A master's degree in sports management, higher education administration, student affairs, counseling or a closely related field and at least 2 years of academic advising/student service experience are preferred.
Essential Functions
- Provide academic support services for student athletes for assigned sport(s).
- Assist student athletes in identifying and meeting their academic and career goals leading toward graduation and meeting NCAA eligibility requirements.
- Coordinate services to address academic needs, create and implement individual study plans, assist with time management and study skills, and recognize and address academic challenges for student athletes.
- Regularly meet with assigned sport(s) to discuss academic issues.
- Prepare and distribute weekly reports to all coaches relative to academic performance, evaluation of performance of at-risk student athletes, and report on weekly study hall hours.
- Meet with prospective student athletes and families throughout the recruiting process.
- Excellent communication skills are essential to the position.
The position is generally sedentary within an office setting, but the ability to travel around campus to meet with coaching staff, student athletes, faculty and administrators is occasionally necessary.
