The Adjunct Puente Counselor provides comprehensive academic, career, transfer, and personal counseling services in alignment with the mission of the College, the Counseling Department, the Puente Project, and Student Equity & Achievement objectives. The counselor supports students in achieving their educational goals through culturally responsive, student-centered practices grounded in equity, access, and transfer success.

This assignment reflects the College’s commitment to advancing equitable student outcomes and strengthening transfer pathways through the Puente Program. The Adjunct Puente Counselor plays a critical role in supporting students’ academic achievement, leadership development, and successful transfer to four-year institutions.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide general counseling services, including guidance regarding educational programs, career pathways, occupational programs, degree requirements, and transfer planning.
Assist students in selecting majors and career pathways and in developing and updating comprehensive Student Educational Plans (SEPs).
Support students in decision-making processes related to college adjustment, personal growth, social development, and academic goal attainment.
Administer and interpret vocational and career assessment instruments.
Assist students with referrals to appropriate on-campus and off-campus resources.
Evaluate transcripts and provide academic advising consistent with district and state requirements.
Track and monitor the academic progress of Puente students to ensure persistence and completion.
Utilize current and emerging counseling technologies to enhance student engagement and success.

Instructional and Programmatic Responsibilities
The Adjunct Puente Counselor may:

Attend and successfully complete the two-week Puente Summer Training Institute.
Attend Puente Program activities and events with students and colleagues.
Participate in recruitment efforts and coordination of Puente mentors and student activities.
Perform duties necessary to advance Puente Program objectives and Student Equity & Achievement goals.

Professional Service and Governance

Participate in departmental meetings, staff meetings, peer evaluations, and campus governance activities as assigned.
Engage in outreach and partnership activities with high schools, four-year institutions, community agencies, and inter-segmental education partners.

Additional Provisions

Counseling schedule may include evening or weekend hours as part of contractual assignment.
Counselors are expected to use and keep abreast of advanced teaching methods, including the use of current and future technologies to support student learning and career objectives. (Added this as it is standard in other faculty/counselor

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR the equivalent as defined by the District and Title 5 regulations

2. Demonstrated understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of California community college students.

Other Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as established by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. Applicants are required to demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualifications by submitting official or unofficial transcripts and providing a complete and detailed record of relevant professional work experience in their application materials.

The District will review education and work history to determine whether minimum qualifications are met. Determinations are made in accordance with Title 5 regulations and District procedures. Official transcripts and additional verification of employment will be required upon offer of employment.

For disciplines requiring a degree and professional experience, applicants must clearly describe how their education and work experience meet the stated minimum qualifications.

Equivalency

Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications exactly may apply for equivalency. Equivalency determinations are made through a separate review process in accordance with District procedures.

Be sure to attach detailed evidence, such as unofficial transcripts and/or other certifications that support the equivalency.

a. Transcripts of ALL college degrees/coursework needed to qualify for this position; unofficial or legible copies are acceptable but must indicate that the degree(s) has been conferred, if applicable.

All degrees and units used to satisfy the minimum qualifications must be from postsecondary institutions accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation. If your degree/coursework is from a college or university outside of the United States, you must submit a detailed evaluation from a professional evaluation agency. Transcripts or translations in English still require the evaluation to show the U.S. equivalence of your degree.

b. If needed to meet the minimum qualifications, a copy (front and back) of your fully satisfied, lifetime California Community College credential authorizing service in the appropriate discipline.

Desirable Qualifications

Prior training and certification through the Puente Summer Training Institute, or eligibility and commitment to complete Puente training as required.
Recent counseling experience in a California Community College, preferably working with Puente, learning communities, or other programs serving disproportionately impacted students.
Demonstrated experience implementing equity-minded, culturally sustaining counseling practices that promote transfer and baccalaureate attainment for Chicanx/Latinx and other historically underrepresented students.
Experience in program coordination (e.g. recruitment, mentor programs, events, data tracking, and reporting for categorical or special programs).
Familiarity with the mission, structure, and goals of the Puente Project and with transfer pathways to CSU, UC, and private universities.
Bilingual/bicultural skills, especially Spanish/English, in support of Puente’s focus on serving Chicanx/Latinx and first-generation students.
Evidence of successful collaboration with instructional faculty to support learning communities, linked courses, or integrated academic/counseling efforts.
