Duties and Tasks:
- Determine eligibility for services in accordance with section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADA and other regulations.
- Evaluate documentation, recommend appropriate accommodations, provide counseling and guidance, assist with academic and personal concerns, and complete referrals to specialized individuals and agencies.
- Complete administrative tasks related to the provision of services to students with disabilities, including entering case notes and other information into a database management system, disseminating pertinent information, and responding to emails.
- Maintain accurate and updated records of all students receiving accommodations that are consistent with College practices and federal and state laws.
- Recruit, hire, train and schedule Readers, Scribes and Notetakers.
- Provide support with the provision of assistive technology and interpreting services, as needed.
- Develop and coordinate regular workshops and events for students to support course success, retention, and completion.
- Provide ongoing training to faculty and staff in a variety of formats, including but not limited to workshops, webinars, guest speakers, and individual consultations.
- Participate in campus and community outreach and campus and/ or college committees and special projects.
- Attend professional development activities within and outside the college to stay updated on changes in the field.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions: Demonstrates skill in providing academic, career, and transfer counseling to adolescents and adults; making referrals to community agencies and following up with individuals who have been referred; presenting workshops or class sessions.
Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Knowledge of ADA, Section 504 and other relevant state and federal regulations concerning services for students with disabilities.
- Knowledge of a wide range of disabilities and associated characteristics with the ability to evaluate documentation to include medical and psychological records.
- Knowledge of counseling and student development theories and best practices.
- Ability to promote inclusive counseling sessions and a campus climate respectful of diversity and multiculturalism.
- Knowledge in providing career counseling to students with disabilities at the postsecondary level.
- Experience evaluating student skills and interests and identifying appropriate career goals.
- Experience working with adults with disabilities in career counseling, community-based instructional and service programs.
- Ability to utilize interpersonal and problem-solving skills to collaborate and negotiate with students, faculty, staff, parents, members of the community and university representatives.
- Knowledge and skills in assistive technology.
- Effective oral and written communication, including strong organizational skills.
- Ability to conduct responsibilities while demonstrating excellent customer service skills.
- Knowledge of, and skill in, computer usage including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, e-mail, student information systems, online learning platforms, ticket tracking software, social media, and use of the Internet to complete research.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner in a fast-paced environment.
- Master’s degree in counseling or in a field appropriately related to the position OR a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in counseling or appropriately related coursework. Qualifying degrees and coursework must be from a regionally accredited institution.
- Significant years of experience in Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, or a related field and experience of the equivalent in one or more of the following:
- Counseling and/ or guidance for students with disabilities in higher education settings, or
- Counseling and/ or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominately or exclusively for persons with disabilities.
- Significant experience with disability services in a higher education setting or secondary school.
- Documented counseling competency demonstrated by completion of either the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential or related experience in secondary school and/or higher education.
- Experience with accessible design for individuals with disabilities.
- Experience utilizing Navigate and/ or PeopleSoft or other student information systems.
- Significant experience with event planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Some experience with teaching college students or workshop facilitation.
