Position Overview
Head Counselors oversee, plan and help to implement programs for a specific age group. Head Counselors supervise 5-15 counselors throughout the summer season. Head counselors also assist the Camp Directors with the daily implementation of the camp programming. As the primary caregivers for each campers in their group Camp Counselors must be fun, dynamic and safety conscious. Camp counselors plan and implement daily schedules, lead activities and songs, coordinate with co-counselors and communicate with parents.

  • help campers grow and learn through challenges
Essential Functions
  • Supervise and serve as a mentor to assigned group of new and returning staff; set clear expectations in areas of camper care, technical skills, community care, and professional goals
  • Supervise the development and implementation of your counselor’s environmental education activities (hikes, animal demonstrations, science exploration activities)
  • Perform and submit weekly observations for assigned staff
  • Plan and implement all-camp activities, large raptor presentations, staff get-togethers, end of year celebrations, and more.
  • Provide performance tips and conduct mid-season evaluations for your staff
  • Lead weekly meetings and check-in with your staff
  • Participate in weekly planning meetings with the Camp Directors and fellow head counselors
  • Execute daily carpool style check out process of campers
  • Coordinate with fellow Head Counselors to oversee daily After Care program
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for your age group (including campers and staff)
  • Lead a camp staff team to deliver and supervise a late evening at camp
  • Contribute to verbal/written evaluations and communication as requested
  • Keep track of and recording hours worked, requesting director’s approval for any additional hours prior to work
  • Complete additional duties as assigned
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season
  • Must be able to lift over 20 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license or state issued ID
Skills
  • Ability to coach, mentor, guide, and lead groups of all ages in an outdoor setting
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • 21 years old & 2 years of college preferred
  • Previous Camp Kingfisher experience required
  • Background in environmental education, natural history, education, childcare, or camps.
  • Willingness to handle captive wildlife, training provided
  • Current tetanus shot or willingness to obtain one
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification, course provided
