Peer Support Specialist

The Peer Support Specialist provides recovery-oriented support services to individuals receiving mental health and/or substance use services. This role leverages lived experience to promote hope, self-advocacy, wellness, and community integration.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide peer-to-peer support using lived experience to promote recovery and resilience
• Support clients in developing coping strategies, self-advocacy skills, and wellness plans
• Facilitate individual and group peer support sessions
• Assist clients with goal setting and navigating community resources
• Collaborate with clinicians and care teams while maintaining peer role integrity
• Document services accurately and in compliance with organizational and regulatory standards
• Maintain ethical boundaries, confidentiality, and professional conduct

Required Qualifications

• Lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery
• Certification as a Peer Support Specialist (or eligibility to obtain certification within a specified timeframe)
• High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree preferred)
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work effectively with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in behavioral health, human services, or community-based programs
• Knowledge of recovery-oriented and trauma-informed care models
• Familiarity with Medicaid or managed care documentation requirements

Work Schedule

• Flexible scheduling may include evenings or weekends

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $22.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week

License/Certification:

• North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (NC CPSS) (Required)
