Aftercare Program Counselors
The Gateway Family YMCA – Rahway Branch is seeking part-time counselors to join our School-Age Childcare team. Programs take place offsite in Rahway elementary schools.
Counselors are responsible for leading their assigned student groups through a variety of planned activities that support program goals and keep students engaged. Positions are available in before care, aftercare, or both. All staff receive a complimentary YMCA membership.
Schedule
Monday–Friday
After Care: 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm (10–20 hours per week)
Key Responsibilities
- Must be available all five weekdays during program hours; schedule follows the Rahway school district calendar.
- Ensure the health, safety, and overall well-being of all participants through consistent and attentive supervision.
- Plan and deliver meaningful, age-appropriate activities, lesson plans, and special events in areas such as arts, character development, creative expression, community service, physical fitness, and nutrition.
- Maintain accurate documentation including attendance, sign-in/out records, and behavior, incident, or accident reports as needed.
- Actively participate in required training sessions, staff meetings, and YMCA special events.
- For preschool-aged children who are not yet potty trained, diapering/changing may be required.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
- Experience working with school-age children preferred; experience with preschoolers is a plus.
- Must have access to a car and a valid driver’s license for travel to program sites.
- Comfortable supervising groups of students in grades Pre-K through 5.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other staff to ensure a positive, high-quality program environment.
- Friendly, nurturing, and professional demeanor with strong communication skills when interacting with parents, school staff, coworkers, and students.
