MFT Qualifications:
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) assigned to a Correctional Facility must meet the following minimum qualifications:
a. At least 12 continuous months of experience within the last 3 years in a public or private institution, performing services similar in scope to those listed below. (Internships are not counted.)
b. Must possess all required licenses, permits, and certifications.
c. Completion of a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from an accredited institution, in accordance with Business and Professional Code 4980.36.
Service Delivery Requirements:
The temporary/relief MFT shall provide services under the supervision of the Supervising Psychiatric Social Worker or designee, following all applicable policies. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct assessments and provide clinical interventions (individual counseling, group therapy, brief counseling).
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams for patient care and planning.
- Assist with transitional care planning for patients being released.
- Assess and determine levels of care within marriage, couples, and family systems.
- Provide Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for patients with Substance Use Disorders (SUD).
- Deliver life-skills education and coping strategies for individuals with SUD.
- Develop and contribute to care and treatment plans.
- Document patient progress, coordinate discharges, and prepare necessary reports.
- Communicate effectively with the care team and external resources.
- Attend case conferences, trainings, and meetings as required.
