Position Summary

The Mobile Crisis Response QMHP will provide rapid, field-based crisis intervention services in the community to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis. This role will operate under the guidelines of Virginia’s Medicaid crisis service system and will collaborate with regional crisis hubs, the 988 call center dispatch system, and local partners to ensure safe and timely support. The QMHP will assess, de-escalate, stabilize, coordinate care, and refer individuals to ongoing services as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to mobile crisis referrals dispatched via the 988 call center or regional crisis hub and as per the provider’s approved referral process. vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov+1
  • Conduct face-to-face on-site assessments in the community (home, school, public space) to evaluate risk of hospitalization, self‐harm, harm to others, and determine appropriate next steps. vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov+1
  • Provide crisis intervention, short‐term counseling, and stabilization services in the least‐restrictive setting consistent with 12 VAC 30-50-226 and other applicable regulation. Legal Information Institute+1
  • Develop a brief crisis plan with the individual (and family/supports as appropriate) that includes recommendations for next steps, safety planning, and linkage to ongoing services.
  • Coordinate with care teams, emergency services, hospitals, community services boards (CSBs), and other supports for follow-up and transition to care.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation consistent with DMAS/DBHDS requirements, including submission of required registration or reference numbers via Virginia Crisis Connect platform. vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov+1
  • Participate in on-call rotations and respond with mobile crisis team within specified timeframe based on state/regional agreement.
  • Provide culturally competent services, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to all licensing, regulatory and Medicaid provider requirements.
  • Attend required trainings and maintain competency in mobile crisis modalities, risk assessment, de-escalation techniques, and relevant regulations. Virginia Medicaid+1

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related human services field; Master’s preferred.
  • Current registration as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP)-Adult (QMHP-A) or QMHP-Child (QMHP-C) in Virginia; or eligibility and willingness to obtain registration. vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov
  • Minimum of [X] years of experience in mental health, crisis intervention, or related field.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to travel within the community.
  • Ability to work nights/weekends/holidays and respond quickly to mobile crisis referrals.
  • Strong clinical assessment, de‐escalation, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Virginia Medicaid crisis services, DBHDS licensing/credentialing standards preferred.
  • Must pass background checks, driving record check, provide proof of required credentials and undergo agency orientation/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s in Social Work (MSW), Counseling (LPC), or Psychology (PhD/PsyD).
  • Experience working in mobile crisis, emergency mental health, or community‐based services.
  • Certification or training in trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, or behavioral crisis intervention.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) or other language proficiency a plus.
