Position Objective:
Staff Counselors are responsible to support the emotional, personal, and spiritual well-being of Summer Staff (“SS”), by overseeing staff community living in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.
General Qualifications:
The Staff Counselor is a Ministerial position. Ministerial staff render their work, stewardship, relationships and behavior as evidence of being followers of Jesus Christ while embracing and affirming Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) mission, vision and beliefs. They are responsible for defining, cultivating and leading MHA’s Christian community, conference programs, and retreats.
Key Job Accountabilities:
- Help facilitate spiritual life development and oversee community life for Conference Center SS
- Model a genuine Christian lifestyle, encouraging and nurturing Summer Staff to serve in a selfless manner to all departments.
- Meet with every summer staff member on your floor twice for a discipleship driven one-on-one.
- Coordinate with Chief of Staff to build community and create opportunities to gather as a whole or check in individually with Summer Staff
- Work with the Chief of Staff to help coordinate weekly spiritual development meetings for all of Summer Staff
- Coordinate with Chief of Staff and Staff Counselor team to maintain of dorm life
- Facilitate regular room checks
- Weekly check laundry room and coordinate with facilities to address any needs
- Help Summer Staff with room issues including by not limited to: locked out of room, maintenance needs, etc.
- Organize, coordinate, and supervise custodial support for dorms ensuring a clean-living environment.
- Support Conference Center Summer Staff in their roles
- Come alongside assigned departments to encourage and support summer staff within those departments
- Coach and reinforce summer staff community life standards to ensure that summer staff are thriving in their community life and job roles
- Collaborate to support other departments through filled role gaps as approved by the Family Ministries Director and Chief of Staff
- Partner with the Family Ministries Coordinator to provide key support to Family Camp Programming
- Every Sunday help set-up the Carnival as instructed by the Family Ministries Coordinator
- Every Tuesday help set-up and tear down all aspects of Zumba and S’mores in partnership with program team as instructed by the Family Ministries Coordinator
- Every Friday help set-up and tear down all aspects of Mall Party in partnership with the program team as instructed by the Family Miniseries Coordinator
- Assist in departments as opportunities arise, working alongside SS to facilitate high performance in each area of assignment.
- Work with Staff counseling team and program team to provide shuttling needs for camp.
- - Perform any other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Education/Certifications/Licenses:
- High school graduate.
- College graduate preferred.
- Graduate work in a ministry or human services related field preferred.
- Must be CPR/First Aid certified (before arriving at camp).
- Current valid driver’s license and a clean driving record required.
Work Experience:
- Prior or current experience working with college age students in ministry settings.
- Must have experience in leadership roles (while working with college age students and young adults).
- Prior camp counseling experience preferred.

- Must possess leadership skills as well as emotional and spiritual maturity.
- Must possess a developed sense of empathy.
- Must be willing to take initiative.
- Ability to articulate gospel of Jesus Christ as communicated in Scripture.
- Mature understanding and respect for authority and peers, as well as camp guidelines and principles.
- Must be flexible with an ability to adjust and problem solve in challenging situations.
- Ability to engage in active listening.
- Ability to engage in a variety of outdoor activities.
- A heart to serve whenever needed.
Physical Demands:
The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Requires sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, and hiking. Position also requires ability to hear, speak and see clearly.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age due to the requirement for onsite community living.
- Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
- Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in MHA’s Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
- Satisfactory completion of background investigation as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
