MHM Services, a Centurion company, is proud to be the provider of mental health services to the California Department of State Hospitals Forensic Assertive Community Treatment Program (FACT).

We are currently seeking a PRN Contractor Psychiatrist to join our team in Fairfield, California.

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Program Director, this position is responsible for providing diagnosis and treatment recommendations and providing services to patients in the FACT program. Provide psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for patients.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provides psychiatric services to individuals who have been found incompetent to stand trial, not guilty by reason of insanity, or offenders with mental disorders, by the Court, and are diagnosed with a serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders (serious mental illness and substance use disorder(s)).
  • Serves as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team and contributes to the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of individual treatment plans with goal of promoting continuity of care.
  • Provides psychiatric follow-up for patients as per their level of care based on diagnosis and program level requirements.
  • In the community/housing facility, orders and prescribes psychotropic and related medications based on clinical indicators of patient’s mental status and symptoms.
  • In the community/housing facility, when initiating psychotropic medication, fully explain the benefits and risks of the medication to the patient and provide documentation of the patient’s informed consent for accepting or refusing the medication.
  • In the community/housing facility, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory findings as clinically required by prescribed psychotropic medication.
  • In the community/housing facility, evaluate patient’s prescribed psychotropic medication and conduct medication reviews as clinically indicated. Orders for renewals or modifications in medication will include documentation of rationale for the treatment decision and will not be completed without a face-to-face interview with the patient except in emergency situations with reasons for the orders without a face-to-face meeting documented.
  • Provide legible medical record documentation and prepare reports of psychiatric services for all patient encounters.
  • Prepare required reports and complete required paperwork in the expected time frame.
  • Refer patients to medical staff when potential for medical disorder is identified during psychiatric evaluation.
  • Respond to patient grievances as requested in a timely manner.
  • Participate in meetings and conference calls for psychiatric staff as scheduled.
  • Accept on-call responsibilities as scheduled.
  • Participate in training on behavioral health related topics for staff as requested.
  • Immediately notify Program Manager of any incident with a patient involving high-risk, accident, and/or life- threatening event that may have the possibility to create a behavioral health liability.
  • Provide consultation to behavioral health and medical staff (nurse) both formally and informally.
  • Identify and maintain professional boundaries to preserve the integrity of the therapeutic process and relationship.
  • Ensure compliance with all facility/DSH and Company policies, Federal and State laws, regulations, and guidelines including HIPAA.
  • Coordinate care closely with security staff while maintaining a positive, collaborative relationship.
  • Deliver care in a nonjudgmental/nondiscriminatory manner to protect the autonomy, dignity and rights of patients.
  • Understand and comply with safety and security rules for the FACT program.


Education/Credentials/Experience

  • Current California practitioner license in good standing.
  • Board certification in psychiatry.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a psychiatrist in a psychiatric hospital, a behavioral health (inpatient or outpatient) center, or correctional facility preferred.
  • A basic understanding of the criminal-legal system preferred.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, and document services in a manner that maximizes accountability; strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently, set and meet deadlines, and demonstrate productivity.
  • Ability to interact well with varied levels of managerial, clinical, court, and administrative staff in community environments and housing facilities.
  • A valid automobile driver’s license, appropriate automobile insurance, and a safe, reliable, registered automobile available for use during work is required.
  • Active in-person CPR certification required along with current tuberculosis screening.
  • Must be able to pass background investigation and obtain agency security clearance and approval for hire from DSH.

Flexible scheduling of up to 20 hours per week

$185/hr.
