Position Title: School Counselor, Grades 7-12

Location: George Junior Republic Union Free School District, Freeville, NY

About the District: The George Junior Republic Union Free School District serves approximately 130 residential and day school students from communities throughout New York State. Residential students are placed with us via The William George Agency for Children’s services. The district has a long history of partnership with The William George Agency and is intent on continuing that strong tradition. Established to educate at-risk youth, the district offers Regents, local, CDOS, and SACC credentials, as well as preparation for the GED. Beyond standard curricula, students have opportunity to engage in a work experience program encompassing 18 trades and occupations, with additional opportunities in Culinary Arts. The academic year comprises four 10-week marking periods and a six-week summer session. Our dedicated staff of Teachers and Teacher Aides maintain a 6:1:1 or 6:1:2 student-to-teacher-to-assistant ratio in core classes. The district is centrally located near Tompkins Cortland Community College, SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College, and Cornell University. ​

Position Overview: The Principal will oversee all functions related to School Counselor. This role requires a dynamic team-focused leader capable of fostering a positive school culture, promoting academic excellence, and addressing the unique needs of our student population.

Key Responsibilities of School Counselor:

· ​ Provide counseling services to middle and high school students.

· Develop & maintain communication with teachers and component schools.

· Handle all records requests from schools, colleges, employers, attorneys, Social Security Disability, Law Guardians, Department of Social Services and Jails for past, present and incoming students.

· Initiate credit recovery as needed.

· Request Labs, exit grades and discharge summaries from teachers.

· Work with staff in developing a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative school culture focused on every student graduating with essential professional skills.

· Coordinate with the principal and teachers to ensure achievement of student success.

· Evaluation and maintenance of student records including: transcripts, work based learning opportunities, IEP’s/504’s, college credits and regents exam data.

· Work with higher education partners to create an integrated academic model that threads high school curriculum with college coursework towards an associate’s degree.

· Oversee promoting of master schedule, articulation of agreements.

· Participate in marketing college and career seminars.

· Demonstrate commitment to equity, inclusion, and an assets-based approach to supporting all students, especially students who have been historically marginalized.

· Provide support to enter post-secondary education and/or the work field.

· Adhere to all policies/procedures set forth in the School Staff Procedure manual.

· Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for School Counselor:

· New York State Certification in School Counseling

· Will consider Internship certificates

  • Experience working with Student with Special Needs
  • State Education Department Fingerprint Clearance
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License (copy required upon initial hire date). ​​

Certification for School Counselor:

· New York State Counselor Certification (within State Education Guidelines).

Schedule for School Counselor: 8:15 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday – Friday. Must be flexible to meet the program's needs. This position is scheduled for the 187 day school year and 33 days during summer.
