West Michigan Aviation Academy is currently seeking a full time Licensed School Counselor.

WMAA is an innovative, academically rigorous charter high school with a focus on hands-on aviation and STEM education. Through implementation of our , WMAA provides a unique educational opportunity for students to focus on high-growth employment fields during their high school education.  

WMAA places intense emphasis on real-life, hands-on projects that incorporate multidisciplinary learning, design thinking, and many more business-level skill sets. Our students enjoy opportunities for business internships, mentorships and job shadows that help them explore career opportunities while still in high school.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

An advanced degree in school counseling with valid certification and authorization from the State of Michigan (NT)

Expertise in addressing social/emotional wellness 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Exemplary organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines

Strong computer skills

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to positively collaborate as a team member 

Familiarity with the culture, goals, objectives, and mission of WMAA

Ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population

Knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial aid

Required criminal history background check

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:  This position emphasizes personal and emotional support of each student as well as academic advising and college counseling. School counselors collaborate with students, parents, and teachers to ensure students are successful within the learning environment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Implement a high school counseling program through guidance lessons, responsive services, systems support, and individual student planning

Directly support students with social/emotional wellness and support the positive mental health of each student through interventions, brief solution-focused counseling, and professional conferral and referral

Collaborate with the school’s social worker to make referrals to appropriate community agencies

Participate in and co-facilitate the intervention team process with the school social worker

Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding student academic and social/emotional needs

Maintain effective communication and rapport with students, school personnel, parents and the community

Guide individuals and groups of students through the development of Educational Development Plans (EPDs) and schedule students for appropriate coursework based on post-secondary goals, interests and ability

Conduct credit checks and evaluate transcripts for grade level placement and academic planning

Serve as the 504 Coordinator for an identified caseload of students

Promote a college-going culture among students and parents by conducting post-secondary workshops, maintaining professional relationships with colleges throughout the country, and educating students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and admissions testing

Track all college applications through SCOIR, write official counselor statements for seniors, and generate reports to the CEO, Deans, and the Board of Directors

Continually evaluate the effectiveness of the school’s counseling program

Performs other duties as assigned
