Job Summary
The Associate Director reports directly to the Director of the University Counseling Center and is responsible for direct management of all clinical and administrative duties in the Director’s absence. The Associate Director provides psychological services to students, including clinical training, outreach, and other modalities. Additionally, the Associate Director provides individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and conceptualizes, implements, and coordinates monthly and yearly assessments of services offered in the University Counseling Center. The Associate Director also collaborates with the Director to establish and assess treatment.
This role involves collaborative leadership to ensure the University Counseling Center operates efficiently, and establishes co-curricular Divisional learning for the University Counseling Center. Develops, implements, updates, and evaluates clinical policies and procedures; provides guidance to clinicians, and manages the administrative functions of the administrative staff. Delivers outreach programming and assists with the development of online resources and webpage content. The Associate Director serves on various University and external partner committees.
Job Duties
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides psychological services to students, including crisis intervention, assessment, counseling, and treatment. Delivers crisis intervention and management with the assessment. Assess clinical services and the needs of a diverse student population. Maintains a clinical caseload of individual and group clients.
- Schedules and shares in the responsibility of “on-call” crisis response in an effective and timely manner. Maintains internal and external networks of consultation and referral to enhance services.
- Provides leadership and management for the University Counseling Center, including policy and program development. Oversee the coordination of University Counseling Center activities and resources, including strategic planning, campus outreach services, and evaluation. Leads the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of the University Counseling Center staff. Conducts employee evaluations and performance reviews.
- Ensures all documentation of student records is kept in a confidential manner.
- Prepares University Counseling Center ad-hoc and budgeting reports as required. Participates in appropriate University committees and provides education to the University community regarding mental health-related topics. Establishes and maintains co-curricular Divisional learning for the University Counseling Center.
- Serves a member of the CARE Team and Threat Assessment Team.
- Must be able to perform all duties as assigned.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Educational:
- Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or a related mental health field from an accredited College or University.
Experience:
- Must hold a current Maryland license—or hold a license from another jurisdiction and be eligible for Maryland licensure as a Mental Health Practitioner(including obtaining CEUs via instructional workshops, webinars, and online courses).
- Minimum of five years of pertinent experience managing multi-disciplinary Clinicians and clinical services.

Knowledge
- Clinical Psychology & Counseling Techniques: Doctoral-level expertise (PhD/Psy.D.) in counseling or clinical psychology, with strong familiarity in individual, group, couples therapy, and crisis intervention.
- Psychological Assessment: Proficient in selecting, administering, interpreting, and reporting psychological tests (e.g., personality, intelligence, aptitude) to inform diagnoses and treatment planning.
- Student Development & Wellness: Understanding of student development theories and practices, including psychoeducational outreach and vocational development initiatives.
- Data-Informed Program Evaluation: Familiarity with research methods and data analysis (e.g., satisfaction surveys, needs assessments, statistical methods like ANOVA, multiple regression) to assess service effectiveness.
Skills
- Clinical & Crisis Intervention: Deliver high-quality mental health counseling, crisis intervention, and after-hours response as needed.
- Supervision & Training: Lead clinical training programs, supervise interns/practicum students, and provide peer supervision in line with accreditation standards.
- Workshop & Presentation Delivery: Design and present psychoeducational seminars and trainings for diverse audiences, including students, parents, faculty, and staff.
- Consultation & Collaboration: Provide consultative services to faculty/staff on student mental health, coordinate with university units and external providers.
- Program Development & Management: Collaborate on policy creation, wellness program implementation, crisis protocols, and continuous process improvement.
Abilities
- Clinical Reasoning: Integrate assessment data and client history to develop treatment plans or refer appropriately.
- Statistical Literacy: Interpret and apply quantitative analysis (e.g., standard deviation, regression, ANOVA) for program evaluation and research.

- Communication & Interpersonal: Convey complex ideas clearly in written/oral formats, adapt to varied audiences, and support a diverse student population.
- Leadership & Problem-Solving: Exercise independent judgment, reason through abstract problems, and substitute as needed for the director in decision-making.
