Our Peer Support Services emphasize hope, healing, and resilience by drawing on lived experiences to guide and support others through their recovery journey.

Position Summary

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) uses their lived experience with mental health or substance use recovery to provide hope, support, and guidance to individuals receiving services. In this role, you will help individuals build coping strategies, develop community connections, and strengthen self-advocacy skills as they navigate recovery. Peer Support Specialists work closely with a Qualified Professional (QP) to ensure high-quality, person-centered care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide peer-based support, mentorship, and advocacy to individuals in recovery.
  • Assist individuals in developing coping strategies, natural supports, and daily living skills.
  • Support individuals with community re-entry following hospitalization or treatment.
  • Facilitate interventions such as:
    • Self-help: Encouraging informed, independent choices.
    • System advocacy: Assisting with communication and navigation of healthcare systems.
    • Crisis support: Helping develop and implement crisis and recovery plans (e.g., WRAP).
  • Educate individuals about resources, services, and recovery tools available in the community.
  • Provide preventive and therapeutic support to promote recovery and independence.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and in compliance with agency standards.
Qualifications

  • Must be a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) in North Carolina.
  • Lived experience of mental health or substance use recovery, with demonstrated personal stability.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid NC driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and ability to maintain professional boundaries.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and adapt to various community-based settings.

    Preferred Skills
  • CPR, First Aid, and crisis intervention certifications.
  • Familiarity with Person-Centered Planning and recovery-oriented models.
  • Experience providing peer support in mental health or substance use recovery programs.
