POSITION TITLE:
Counselor/Elementary - Title I Anticipated
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Implement the District Development Guidance Plan responding to the unique needs of the individual student.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in collaboration with Special Education and Student Support Services to provide appropriate services for disruptive/harmful behaviors in school.
- Assist individual students in demonstrating self-confidence in reaching educational goals.
- Work with teachers and staff to identify potentially disruptive/harmful students through the campus referral process.
- Conduct individual and group counseling.
- Conduct small group counseling and/or guidance sessions for students.
- Work closely with school administrators, the school counselor, and teachers in developing strategies to address issues surrounding unhealthy behaviors.
- Serve as a resource for students, parents and staff members to access community resources.
Provide counseling services in the form of classroom presentations, parent and group presentations, family consulting, staff trainings and consultations.
- Provide aid in the usage of supplemental resources to help with high concentration of students from low income families, provide a high-quality education that will enable all children to exceed the state’s student performance standards.
- Serve as a liaison between school and families on parent involvement policy and school-parent compact. Review and revise parent policies to include identified needs.
- Develop plans for assisting students in transition to better adjust to the next educational level.
- Coordinate and integrates federal, state, and local services and programs including programs supported under Title I such as Limited English Proficient (LEP) students, homeless, and migrant, to meet the unique needs of students.
- Provide professional development to teachers on how to relate to parents.
- Evaluate the parent involvement component and what worked in our program and improvements needed.
- Attend required District in-service and staff meetings.
- Meet deadlines as established by the Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS)/technology departments for scheduling, grade reporting, pupil data information, and at-risk coding.
- Play an active role in dropout prevention by monitoring attendance, grades, and actively communicating with stakeholders.
- Collaborate, consult with, and support faculty and staff.
- Demonstrate self-control and exhibit overall positive approach.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Inform parents of state standards.
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships.
- Coordinate and/or teach anti-victimization and bullying programs.
- Promote positive self-image in students.
- Treat students consistently and empathetically.
- Maintain and improve professional competence through reading, course work, and professional activities.
- Consult with District Coordinator of Guidance and Counseling when necessary.
- Regular attendance.
- Maintain confidentiality.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience working with students in an educational setting or with school-aged children
- Experience supporting students-school-aged children in crisis situations
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- Master’s Degree
- Professional school counselor’s certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and college and career awareness
- Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to develop and strengthen social, emotional, and academic skills
- Ability to implement the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Program
- Knowledge, understanding, and ability to interpret various testing instruments
- Knowledgeable about academic curriculum
- Knowledge/awareness of how to access community resources
