Summary:
The School-based Counselor (SBA) is responsible for developing and facilitating the social, personal, and academic development of youth, adolescents, and teenagers via motivational interviewing and other selective individual and group counseling methods and frameworks. The SBA serves as a guide and mentor who assists youth with setting and achieving their individualized academic, personal, and vocational goals. Additionally, they assist in school[1]based Wellness Center administrative tasks including outreach, referral, and intake system management. They are often the first point of contact for the Wellness Center and a school liaison.
Essential Functions:
- Engage youth individually to build trusting relationships; develop skills; and set goals.
- Implement selective individual and group counseling sessions utilizing motivational interviewing framework.
- Facilitate internal referrals via psychoeducation of Wellness Center and services
- Support overall Wellness Center intake systems including collecting client information.
- Liaise between youth, families, schools, agencies, and other community partners to best support and advocate for youth including external referrals and services.
- Support school community by providing education workshops as needed.
- Implement incentive systems to increase and maintain attendance and connection to services.
- Maintain required documentation of efforts and services into relevant data systems.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent in human services, social work, or related field.
- Bilingual Spanish required
- Understand youth popular culture trends and social media platforms
- Ability to plan and carry out assignments independently.
- Ability to prioritize, adhere to timelines and multi-task.
- Bilingual in one or more of the following: Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Bengali and others, may be required depending on client needs. Qualifications Preferred: 2
- Bachelor’s degree in human services field such as social work, counseling, etc.
- Experience working with youth in a counseling or case management setting.
