Posting Summary
Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Physician Specialist (Psychiatrist) for Southwoods State Prison, located in Bridgeton, NJ. The Physician Specialist provides direct clinical care to state prisoners, functions collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and maintains effective communication with staff and administration.
Duties include:
  • Provides assessments, direct clinical care and treatment planning to inmates.
  • Conducts comprehensive psychiatrist assessments demonstrating a review of the electronic record, psychotropic medications, history of mental illness, prior psychiatric hospitalization, suicidal, unusual, or bizarre behavior) for new admissions to UCHC's Special Needs roster according to established timeframes.
  • Is knowledgeable about and follows DOC and UCHC policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, emergency and non-emergency forced medication, management of potentially suicidal inmates, psychiatry services, and therapeutic restraint.
  • Orders, initiates and interprets laboratory tests according to required time frames or as medically necessary including metabolic monitoring, mood stabilizer blood levels, thyroid function, AIMS testing, and other appropriate biochemical monitoring.
  • Prescribes and renews medications that are deemed medically necessary within required time frames.
