Duties & Responsibilities
Purpose of Position:
This class of positions encompasses professional and/or supervisory work of varying degrees of difficulty in the field of psychology, providing psychological services to individuals and groups across various settings, including Forensic Psychiatric Evaluation Court Clinics (FPECC), which may include participation in the process of commitment of patients to institutional care. Ensures patient-centered quality care and services in support of better outcomes and improved patient experience, in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations, and psychology standards of care. All personnel perform related work.
Under direction, with broad latitude for independent or unreviewed action or decision-making, performs responsible professional and/or supervisory work in the field of psychology.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
At a more difficult and responsible level, performs the duties of Assignment Level I:
1. Through clinical interviewing and/or through the selection, administration and interpretation of standard group and individual tests of personality development and intellectual capacity, evaluates individuals' emotional and intellectual functioning.
2. Maintains suitable records and files of test performance and treatment results.
3. Prepares reports of psychological findings which may be included in clinical case histories, files, etc.
4. Consults with psychiatrists, social workers, judges and other relevant parties regarding the diagnoses, prognoses and recommendations for disposition of individual cases.
5. Attends and may participate in psychological and general staff conferences.
6. Participates in individual and group research by evaluating initial summarization and quantitative treatment of data, preparing research reports for publication.
7. May be required to provide psychological consultation services on non-clinical issues, and may offer psychological consultation services to other City agencies.
8. May participate in treatment programs administering psychotherapy.
9. May provide neuro-psychological and vocational assessments.
10. May prepare commitment papers, including write-ups and documentation for cases.
11. May give instruction or training in psychodiagnostic and/or therapeutic techniques.
12. May oversee the work of psychology interns, social workers and paraprofessional mental health workers.
13. May do research on test development. May contribute to formulation of hypotheses and details of research design.
14. May be required to testify in court or at other hearings.
In addition to performing duties of Assignment Level I at a more difficult and responsible level, also performs the following tasks:
1. Supervises the work of unlicensed psychologists and other subordinate staff in the areas of diagnosis, therapy, and research, and coordinates their activities with the work of other professional workers.
2. Evaluates and develops habilitation plans and treats individuals for addictions, cognitive impairments, and neuropsychological disorders.
3. Administers therapy in difficult atypical cases, which may include individual, group and family counseling and/or therapy.
4. Coordinates training programs and conducts case conferences and seminars for training purposes.
5. Gives formal and informal instruction to psychologists and psychologists-in-training on diagnostic, therapeutic and research techniques.
6. Conducts in-service training programs by organizing and staffing conferences and seminars, drawing up curricula, and evaluating efficiency of programs.
7. May perform relevant clinical professional activities.
8. May be part of a 24-hour trauma team providing counseling/evaluation at crisis situations within the New York metropolitan area.
9. May work with City's Family Court System to conduct assessments for termination of parental rights, custody disputes, neglect and abuse cases.
10. May provide evaluations of fitness to proceed and pre-sentencing evaluations to Criminal Courts.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Psychologist issued by the NYSED; or
2. Within six (6) months of appointment to this Level, must obtain valid license and current registration to practice as
a Psychologist issued by the NYSED and provide proof that all of the following documentation has been
submitted to the NYSED:
a. Proof of passing licensing examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) by the
Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB).
b. Application for Licensure (Form 1).
c. Certification of Professional Education (Form 2).
d. Reports of Professional Experience/Certifications of Supervised Experience (Form 4). Note: Post-doctoral
experience in NYS must have been obtained under a NYS Limited Permit.
e. If already licensed in another State, Certification of Out-of-State Licensure and Exam Grades (Form 3)
and Certification of Licensed Experience (Form 4F) should be substituted for Form 4 above.
