POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Day Treatment Counselor is a member of a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals serving adults with severe and chronic mental illness, often with co-occurring developmental and/or intellectual disabilities. Primary responsibilities include facilitating group sessions, providing individual counseling, offering community support, and implementing treatment plans. Group therapy topics may include goal setting, DBT skills, and other creative forms of expression. The program uses evidence-based practices such as DBT, ACT, and FAP to create a therapeutic, holistic learning environment.

Salary: $46,000-52,000

Shift: M-F 8:30 am-5:00 pm

Location: Elwood

REPORTS TO: Day Program Director

NETWORK OR DEPARTMENT: Network 4/Behavioral Health

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain a caseload of individual clients, meeting with each for regularly scheduled sessions.
  • Direct treatment for assigned clients, collaborating with the PSR Director to apply effective, evidence-based interventions.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Contextual Behavior Therapy principles.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled group sessions and organize community outings.
  • Submit service documentation promptly and accurately.
  • Maintain awareness of the program milieu, intervening as appropriate using evidence-based methods to assist clients.
  • Interact effectively with clients to foster a therapeutic environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the team to ensure coverage of essential program functions.
  • Actively participate in case staffings and regularly scheduled PSR staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary treatment team—including residential staff and Supportive Employment—to help clients achieve their goals.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of and willingness to use third-wave Contextual Behavior Therapy models.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and solve problems.
  • Ability to foster positive staff relations and promote employee morale.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • High level of self-motivation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods, whether sitting or standing.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to successfully complete and pass a drug screen and physical examination, which includes: balancing, pulling, pushing, standing, climbing, kneeling, reaching, repetitive motion, pushing wheelchairs, and lifting up to 40 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in counseling psychology, social work, or another human service-related field.
