Position Summary
The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: counseling services and/or teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.
The assignment may include instructing classes, which could result in a Counselor/Instructional split assignment.
The position will be assigned to the Folsom Lake College, but may include periodic assignments to other sites as well, including El Dorado Center and the Rancho Cordova Center).
Position Salary Information:

Typical Duties
The counseling assignment may include, but is not limited to:
- Counseling academically and/or economically disadvantaged students.
- Provide consultation to departments, and campus constituents on transfer trends, challenges and initiatives as needed.
- Develop and lead workshops and trainings related to transfer topics including but not limited to transfer preparation, Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG), UC and CSU application processes, UC TAP, CSU Transfer Planner, HBCU, private or out of state transfer, and major exploration.
- Serve as a point of contact and provide community college counseling oversight for students participating in the UC Dual Admission program and CSU Transfer Success Pathway (TSP) program.
- Provide transfer experiential learning opportunities for students by coordinating campus tours and hosting an annual Transfer Day event.
- Collaborate with the Career and Transfer Services (CTC) team in evaluating and designing resources, services, and activities necessary for supporting students seeking transfer opportunities through the center, various departments, and centers.
- Provide input and ongoing guidance on the development and updating of the Career and Transfer Services Annual Unit Plan (AUP), Vision Aligned Reporting (VAR) and other reports to meet department and institution goals.
- Providing crisis intervention and personal counseling.
- Assisting with career exploration and decision-making regarding transfer.
- Addressing trends and challenges facing community college students.
- Counseling designed to support student retention and success.
- Providing individual and group counseling to assist students in making decisions regarding associate’s degree, certificate programs, transfer, and occupational/career goals.
- Participating in the planning and implementation of the Student Success Plan activities, including counseling, developing Student Education Plan (iSEPs), facilitating course planning and follow-up services as directed.
- Assessing the needs, interests, abilities, achievements, and aptitudes of students.
- Making recommendations to assist the college in fulfilling its obligation to students consistent with the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) Plan.
- Developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with instructional areas, outreach centers, feeder high schools, neighboring colleges, and community resource agencies; fostering effective high school and college relations.
- Preparing and maintaining counseling records using current technology, relaying pertinent information to college personnel as needed, and respecting the confidentiality of such records as required by law.
- Assisting students in exploring careers using current technology, in developing an understanding of the employment environment, and in making and implementing career decisions.
- Assisting students in exploring four-year college transfer options, in understanding transfer agreements and transfer degrees, and in making sound decisions related to transferring.
- Administering assessments and inventories/career tests to groups or individual students and interpreting the results.
- Providing counseling for issues impacting retention, persistence, and academic success, and referring students to resources as appropriate and necessary.
- Conducting transfer-related activities focused on students matriculating to 4-year colleges and universities (e.g. counseling, orientation and workshop sessions, and developing transfer agreements).
- Conducting high school, business, and community outreach.
- Performing other duties as assigned to meet counseling departmental needs and college initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- Have a master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family, and child counseling; OR the equivalent.* All degrees must be from an accredited institution completed by time of hire. (NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
- Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
- NOTES:
- Degree titles must match the stated minimum qualifications exactly (word-for-word). Titles with added, missing, or rearranged words will not be accepted. If your degree title does not match the minimum qualifications exactly, you must submit documentation for “equivalency” to be considered for this position (see next bullet). E.g. minimum qualification states Chemistry degree needed, and your degree title states Organic Chemistry. You will need to apply for “equivalency”. If you fail to submit this documentation and your degree title does not match, you will be disqualified.
