Major Job Functions
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:
- Plans, organizes, and supervises clinical operations to provide care
- Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services
- Establishes, in collaboration with interdisciplinary team, positive professional relationships
- Facilitates team meetings, daily rounds and communication among patients, families, interdisciplinary team members and contracting agencies
- Coordinates and integrates patient care services with other Health System departments/services and those of the community
- Establishes and maintains mechanisms to monitor continuing compliance with JCAHO, OSHA, and other regulatory/accrediting agencies' standards
- Establishes and maintains mechanisms to determine the sufficient numbers, qualifications, and competency of staff to provide departmental services
- Establishes and maintains a mechanism whereby staff members are identified as being competent to safely and effectively utilize the appropriate equipment in their work area
- Assumes responsibility for continuously assessing and improving performance via participation in Performance Improvement (PI) activities and Quality Control mechanisms
- Provides orientation, in-service training and continuing education for staff
- Makes recommendations regarding space and resource requirements
- Participates in selection of external sources of patient care services when such services are required
- Takes necessary steps to determine the complete and accurate charging for patient services rendered as well as to monitor, adjust and, where possible, to correct negative expense variances
- Develops, implements and evaluates strategic plans and operations via departmental budgets, PI Plan and Management Outcome Plan
- Collaborates with Care Coordination staff daily to identify barriers to patient throughput, intervene to eliminate barriers, and facilitate discharges early in the day
- Oversees, facilitates and monitors customer satisfaction, patient throughput and hospital functional capacity through compliance with the Hospital Innovation Project (HIP), if applicable
- Other duties as assigned
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Education And Formal Training
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing required (or actively pursuing BSN)
- Current licensure in North Carolina as a Registered Nurse
- 2 years clinical experience related to nursing area of management required
- 1 year of management or management related experience required
- Demonstrates leadership characteristics
- Working knowledge of budgets, staffing, Performance Improvement and regulatory requirements
- Verbal and written skills required
- Strong interpersonal skills required
- Must have knowledge of NC Nurse Practice Act
- Has knowledge of the age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of the patients typically served
- Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs
- Visual acuity for observation of patients
- Long periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting
- Occasional assistance with heavy lifting
- May be required to work variable shifts on occasion
- May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
