Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided a comprehensive continuum of high-quality, essential, and community-based services to citizens of the Peninsula who are living with a mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. We proudly opened the BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center in April 2025 to increase access to services for individuals experiencing behavioral health crises.

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A LICENSED THERAPIST, CRISIS STABILIZATION (LPC, LCSW, LMFT) AT LICENSED THERAPIST, CRISIS STABILIZATION (LPC, LCSW, LMFT)

As a Licensed Therapist at BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center, you will support the Crisis Stabilization Unit and the 23-Hour program. You will manage a diverse caseload of managed care clients facing mental illness and co-occurring substance-related disorders in an outpatient setting. This role involves conducting initial assessments, applying complex theoretical approaches to individual, group, and family therapy, and making informed treatment recommendations. You will provide care to individuals in both the Crisis Stabilization Unit and the 23-hour program, which are 24-hour programs, addressing immediate psychiatric crises with a multidisciplinary approach. Your responsibilities include planning therapeutic programs for clients aged four and up, monitoring their progress, and offering a variety of support services, including educational sessions and peer recovery services. Additionally, you will supervise and mentor other staff, ensuring a comprehensive approach to client care while maintaining up-to-date records and preparing diagnostic reports.

This position is vital to delivering high-quality service in a supportive and engaging environment, where both client and staff well-being is prioritized.

To be successful as a Licensed Therapist at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, candidates must possess a valid LPC, LCSW, or LMFT license and a minimum of two years of clinical experience in therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention, and case management functions. Strong decision-making skills are essential as you'll apply complex theoretical approaches to diverse therapeutic scenarios, including individual, group, and family therapy. Proficiency in using various healthcare software tools for record-keeping and documentation is required. Additionally, candidates must be eligible or approved for Managed Care Organization (MCO) credentialing, ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Effective communication and collaboration skills are critical, as you will work with a multidisciplinary team and consult with other professionals both within and outside the agency. A proactive approach to crisis management and the ability to develop tailored therapeutic programs will enhance your effectiveness in this vital role.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • LPC, LCSW, or LMFT licensed professional with two (2) years of clinical experience, including therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention, and case management functions. Must be eligible or approved for MCO credentialing.
