JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Client Care- Act as the liaison for clients. Obtain and/or evaluate the medical histories of a client to determine the risk for genetic or medical conditions and diseases. Discuss with a client the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management of risk for genetic or medical conditions and diseases. Identify and/or coordinate genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for genetic assessment. Integrate the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests with individual and family medical histories. Explain to a client the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests. Evaluate the response of a client to one or more genetic conditions or the risk of reoccurrence and provide counseling and guidance. Identify and/or use community resources that provide medical, educational, financial, and psychosocial support and advocacy. Provide medical, genetic, and counseling information to clients.
- Core skills- Provide independent genetic counseling services in the conduct of healthcare. Implement genetics services independently. Develops an area of expertise.
- Research: The genetic counselor will contribute to planning and conducting divisional and / or institutional research including serving on a research advisory committee, contributing to presented abstracts, and developing research registries.
- Education- The genetic counselor will provide independent supervision and education for students at the University level, residents, and fellows. Provide genetics-related lectures at divisional or local meetings.
- Service- The genetic counselor will assist in planning and conducting service activities by serving as a volunteer in genetics related groups, and / or on pertinent committees within the division.
Perform independent genetic counseling. Complete at least 50 hours of additional training applicable to practice of genetic counseling. Contributes to divisional research and provides divisional lectures. Serves as a volunteer for professional organization or advocacy group.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Required for Genetic Counselor I:
- Masters degree in related field. May require clinical license, certification or training
- No directly related experience
- Ohio Genetic Counseling License; Certified/eligible for certification by the ABMG or ABGC
Required for Genetic Counselor II:
- Masters degree in related field. May require clinical license, certification or training
- 0 - 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline
- Ohio Genetic Counseling Licenses; Certification through the ABGC
Expected Starting Salary:
GC I: $72,841.60 - 91,915.20
GC II: $79,830.40 - 101,150.40
