JOB DESCRIPTION: School-based counselors provide and deliver school-based services that improve student outcomes. School-based counselors provide individual and group counseling sessions to youth in grades k-12. School-based counselors work within the school system to assist in supporting youth’s social, emotional, behavioral and academic well-being.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Schedule and Conduct regular mental and behavioral counseling sessions with youth in grades k-12
  • Establish positive and trusting relationships with youth and school personnel
  • Collaborate with school personnel to determine how best to meet youth’s needs
  • Implement various treatments and protocols to provide guidance and appropriately address youth needs
  • Ability to accurately diagnose based on youth’s symptoms
  • Continually assess progression/regression of youth and provide the proper ongoing treatments
  • Educate and involve family members or other loved ones in the treatment process when necessary
  • Collaborate with outside agencies, as necessary, to ensure continuity of care
  • Record and maintain adequate documentation (intake forms, biopsychosocial assessment, treatment plans, progress notes, mental health inventories, etc.)
  • Maintain neat and organized files and workspace
  • When required, refer youth to outside sources or agencies that can better address their specific needs
  • Maintain the strictest confidentiality of each youth
  • Maintain all required licenses and certifications
  • Provide mental health related trainings and attend community meetings as needed
  • Participate in weekly supervision and staff meetings
  • Assist with outreach efforts

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master’s Degree

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field. Licensed or licensed-eligible counselor or social worker preferred.
  • Meet all necessary state licensure requirements for NJ
  • Minimum of one-year therapy experience in an outpatient or in-home setting.
  • Must have experience with utilizing short-term therapy modalities.
  • Knowledgeable of the DSM-5
  • Must obtain personal liability insurance upon hiring
