Job Summary:

The Triage/Crisis Care Counselor - Temporary is a clinical position requiring strong assessment skills and clinical background. This position will coordinate services for TCU students who present to CMHC either for the first time to initiate counseling, or who are experiencing a mental health crisis. This position will facilitate level of care assessments for students who may need inpatient treatment from established treatment centers, and will be the primary response to other clinical crisis situations that present to the center. This position also will carry a small caseload of students who need to be managed through crisis services to ensure that they are getting the support they need.


Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Serves as the primary response for incoming or emergent clinical issues that present to the center, including telephone contacts that exceed routing information requests.
2. Facilitates recommendations for level-of-care assessments for students who may need a higher level of care from an established treatment center/community provider.
3. Expands the center’s network with community providers to document students’ ability to follow through with referrals to off-campus treatment.
4. Carries a small caseload of students needing crisis management until they transition to a higher level of care.
5. Maintains professional and confidential clinical records in accordance with state laws.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Required Education & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or related field.
  • Experience conducting clinical intakes and triages.
  • Experience with providing crisis management services in a clinical setting.

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • 2+ years in providing crisis care and case management.
  • Experience working in a clinical setting, particularly with a college student population.
  • Experience with making referrals, and collaborating with treatment centers as well as community mental health resources.

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

  • Fully licensed in the State of Texas and practice independently, such as LPC, LMFT or LCSW, etc.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training:

  • None

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of strong assessment and crisis intervention skills.
  • Knowledge of college student development and counseling theories.
  • Knowledge of referral procedures and community resources.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Skill in interpersonal, oral, and written communication.
  • Skill in organization.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Skill in computer literacy, web applications in particular.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and to collaborate with other departments.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • This role is an on campus, in-person position.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
