Overview

Director of Public Policy Division Objective

Directs engagement objectives to develop and maintain productive relations with all levels of government to support and enhance Michigan Farm Bureau’s member policy development process. Develops plans, policies, and teams to build relationships and liaise with government entities (federal, state, or local) that regulate or influence production agriculture. Directs ongoing monitoring and analysis of proposed legislation, emerging issues, and trends to determine the potential impact on the industry and organization. Collaborates with industry groups and organizations with complementary objectives.



Responsibilities

Director of Public Policy Division Responsibilities

Plan, coordinate, and manage the activities of the division to maximize staff talents, organization resources, and policy implementation success. Work to maintain recognition of the organization as one of the top lobbying organizations in Michigan’s capitol.

 

Direct and coordinate the development and dissemination of information materials on probable issues affecting agriculture for use by appropriate county and state committees, officers, boards, affiliated company personnel, and Michigan Farm Bureau staff in formulating official policy positions to guide the organization in effectively solving such issues.

 

Direct activities of the state government relations staff within the division to successfully carry out policy through legislative and regulatory action, and to keep members informed and trained to take effective grassroots action.



Qualifications



Director of Public Policy Division Qualifications

Required

Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, agribusiness, political science, or public policy required. Master’s degree preferred.

 

Five to seven years’ experience in the field of public policy or legislative services.

 

Five to seven five years’ experience in an agricultural organization or business with management responsibilities required.

 

Minimum five years supervisory/management experience required.

 

Experience in policy analysis, research, advocacy, government affairs, lobbying, or consulting required.

 

Understanding of the policy landscape, legislative processes, and the specific issues relevant to the organization or sector.
