Black Student Achievement Program (BSAP) Community Liaison Candidate Pool

Classification Title: Temporary Position

DESCRIPTION

Under the guidance of the Black Student Achievement Program (BSAP) Specialist, the temporary BSAP Community Liaison collaborates with students, staff, families, and community members to accelerate the academic achievement of all African American students. Temporary BSAP Community Liaison is employed through the Howard County Public School System and is assigned to one or more specific schools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all the qualifications below to be considered for the vacancy.

Education:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, a social science, or a related field (must scan and upload to the online application). Education completed outside the United States must be evaluated by an MSDE approved organization. For a list of approved vendors, please click here .

Experience:

  • Experience working with African American students, and their families, in the United States.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with people of different backgrounds.
  • Evidence of successful interpersonal skills that will enable the candidate to communicate and work collaboratively with administrators, central office staff, students, teachers, families, and other stakeholder groups.
  • Proficiency with web-based productivity and collaboration tools (Google Suite preferred or Microsoft Office Suite).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience analyzing data and making data-driven decisions.
  • Experience working on equity, advocacy, or related projects.
  • Experience working with community organizations or government agencies.

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The list below is a summary of the functions of the job, not an exhaustive or comprehensive list of all possible job responsibilities, tasks, and duties.

  • Collaborate with school staff to implement the school system vision and mission by serving as a communication link between school staff, African American students, and their families.
  • Monitor the academic progress of all African American students to ensure appropriate placement in academic programs, as well as growth and acceleration of academic achievement.
  • Monitor the behavioral data of all African American students in order to increase positive learning behaviors that set a foundation for student achievement.
  • Educate the school community towards a deeper understanding of African American students and their families.
  • Serve as a communication link between school staff and African American students and their families.
  • Engage and facilitate the involvement of African American families in the educational process. • Establish relationships with administrators, colleagues, students, and parents that reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
  • Collaborate with nonprofits and government agencies to support African American students and their families.
  • Participate in curricular program meetings (such as Gifted and Talented Education, Special Education, and other Student Services) to provide information, support, and feedback to families.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

This is a 10-month per year position in the Howard County Education Association Educational Support Professionals bargaining unit. This position is limited to 17 hours per week. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is exempt from overtime.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be included in further evaluation. The evaluation may be a rating of your application based on your education, training, and experience as they relate to the requirements and preferred qualifications of the position. Interviews will be limited to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, have experience and education which most closely match the position qualifications and the needs of the school system.

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

Compensation

$25 per hour.

The current hourly rate for this position is determined by the current budget allocations of the Howard County Public School System.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Professional references will be contacted prior to any offer of employment. Recommended candidates will be required to provide references from current and recent supervisors.

All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
