Position Summary

A Recreation Therapist at ScenicView provides direct therapeutic recreation services to neurodiverse young adults (ages 18-35) with Level 1 Autism and related disabilities in a residential support setting. This role focuses on teaching recreational, social, and leisure skills using evidence-based Direct Instruction techniques to promote physical, social, and emotional well-being. The Recreation Therapist collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to support student progress toward Recreation Program Outcomes and individual MAP (Master Action Plan) goals, fostering independence and community engagement.

Specific Duties

  • Utilize Direct Instruction techniques to teach recreational, social, and leisure skills aligned with Recreation Program Outcomes.
  • Develop and implement engaging activities (e.g., group games, fitness programs, or community outings) to support student skill development.
  • Conduct formal and informal assessments to measure student progress in recreational and social skills.
  • Analyze pre- and post-assessment data to adjust activities and interventions as needed.
  • Document student skill development progress in the MAP database promptly and professionally.
  • Collaborate with the recreational therapy team to plan and execute student enrichment activities.
  • Manage recreational therapy supplies and inventory, ensuring resources are available and well-maintained.
  • Collaborate with Service Coordinators to align activities with student MAP goals and recommend scheduling or service adjustments.
  • Recommend involvement of other specialists when additional interventions are needed.
  • Regularly update students on their progress in recreational and social skills.
  • Consult with Service Coordinators to create, modify, or amend student plans or schedules, respecting the Service Coordinator’s final authority on student plans.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Maintain frequent and constructive communication with the Recreation Program Supervisor and Service Coordinators.
  • Participate in formal and informal collaboration, including team meetings, office hours, and digital communication (email, phone, text).
  • Notify relevant team members of the skills and goals students are working on during recreational activities.
  • Communicate observed needs or accommodation suggestions to the Service Coordinator.
  • Share concerns or updates on student progress promptly to ensure coordinated support.
  • Collaborate with the recreational therapy team to ensure cohesive planning and execution of enrichment activities.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (TRS) in Utah, preferably Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
  • Experience working with neurodiverse individuals or in special education preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated openness, flexibility, and willingness to learn.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage supplies and activity planning.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry recreational equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Willingness to engage in physical activities (e.g., sports, outdoor recreation) to model appropriate behaviors and skills for students.
  • Ability to work in various settings, including indoor and outdoor environments, in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, or demonstrate physical tasks to support student instruction.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $21.00 - $24.00 per hour
