The School Counselor provides social-emotional, behavioral, and academic support for students in grades TK–8. As a part-time independent contractor, the counselor collaborates with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student success and emotional wellness, while also promoting a positive school climate. The counselor does not serve in a disciplinary role, but rather works to support students' well-being, reintegration into the classroom, and overall mental health.

Overview: School Counselor
Assumption School | Part-Time | San Leandro, CA
2 days per week (8 hours per day)
20 hours weekly with flexible prep time

Responsibilities:
How you’ll do it:
- Positively impact students’ educational, behavioral, social, and emotional well-being.
- Nurture student potential through personalized, small-group, and classroom counseling, focusing on academic, emotional, behavioral, or developmental needs.
- Empower parents and school staff by connecting them with community resources that align with students' unique needs.
- Ensure administrative excellence by completing accurate, efficient paperwork.
- Stay updated on field trends to enhance guidance and support for students.
- Foster trust and reliability by adhering to the Counseling Policy Manual, funding guidelines, and school procedures.
- Provide short-term, solution-focused individual and small group counseling.
- Support students with emotional regulation, social skills, peer relationships, and
academic stress. - Conduct classroom observations to assist teachers with behavioral strategies and support.
- Collaborate with the Learning Support Coordinator and Principal as needed for student support plans.
- Provide resources to teachers and parents on behavioral and emotional development.
- Assist with crisis intervention and coordinate referrals for external mental health support.
- Help facilitate student reentry into the classroom following behavioral or emotional
incidents. - Lead or support student workshops and activities around SEL topics such as empathy, inclusion, and kindness.
- Maintain student records in accordance with confidentiality laws and professional ethics.
- Participate in Student Success Team (SST) meetings when appropriate.
- Support a positive school climate by collaborating with teachers, administration, and other school staff.

What we’ll need from you:
A commitment to the values of Assumption School.- Valid California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling
- Experience working with children and adolescents in a school, clinical, or group setting (can include practicum or internship hours).
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and professionalism.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with best practices in trauma-informed care, conflict resolution, and
- Understanding of the academic, emotional, and developmental needs of students in grades TK - 8th
Must provide documentation of liability insurance, CPR and First Aid Certifications, and background clearance as required by the school.
