Counselor (Bilingual in English & South Asian Language)

Job Classification: Full Time/Non-Exempt (40 hours/week)

Reports to: Director of Client Services

Daya empowers South Asian survivors of domestic and sexual violence with culturally specific services and educates the community to end the cycle of abuse.

Core Job Description: The Counselor will apply specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills to assess and treat mental health conditions associated with domestic violence and sexual assault. Working closely within the Client Services team, the counselor will provide individual counseling and psychotherapy as well as supportive case management to comprehensively address client needs. The Counselor will provide counseling, crisis intervention, legal advocacy and accompaniment, housing support, translation and interpretation services, economic empowerment services, and other forms of case management.

Duties include:

DIRECT CLIENT SERVICES:

· Answer helpline calls, complete intakes, provide crisis intervention and counseling, and assess needs for appropriate intervention and referrals.

· Use specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions, and emotional disturbances in adult survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

· Through a culturally competent lens, apply theory, knowledge, methods, ethics, and the professional use of self to restore and enhance social and psychosocial functioning of clients through regular therapy sessions.

· Assess lethality and provide crisis management counseling both on the helpline and in ongoing therapy sessions.

· Integrate various therapeutic interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) into counseling sessions with clients.

· Provide supportive legal, criminal justice, and housing advocacy as needed. Examples include assisting with obtaining protective orders, law enforcement accompaniment, and assisting in locating safe housing.

· Assist in organizing and conducting therapeutic support groups and workshops.

· Track client communication and maintain accurate client records within the client database.

· Promote an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration to accomplish Daya initiatives.

· Build and maintain a network of mainstream and South Asian professional resources.

· Attend and contribute to staff meetings and other internal meetings.

· Participate in appropriate professional development webinars, seminars and forums.

· Serve as speaker/trainer for Daya by participating in community education programs as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Master’s degree and licensure in Social Work or Counseling required: LPC, LPC Associate, LMFT, LMSW, or LCSW. Licensees under supervision must have external supervisor.

· At least 2 years relevant experience (may be internship) required

· Proficiency in at least one major South Asian language required

· Experience in therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) preferred

· Must be a team player with ability to lead

· Must have a commitment to Daya’s mission, vision, and atmosphere of collaboration

· A commitment to ending violence through well researched, culturally informed, and equitable approaches

· Self-starter who thrives independently and collaboratively and seeks to learn with curiosity

· Must show excellent writing, reporting, and communication skills

· Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends

· Proficiency in computer applications and utilization of online resources to meet client and organizational needs

· Experience working in a non-profit environment preferred

· Salary range $57,000-$60,000 annually based on experience
