Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center, located in Los Angeles, is a non-profit organization that provides an array of comprehensive mental health services for Children, Adolescents, Transitional Aged Youth, and Adults suffering from mental illness in the Greater Los Angeles area. The organization consists of a standalone fifty-five (55) )-bed hospital and six outlying outpatient facilities that have anywhere from fourteen (14) beds to one hundred and thirty-four (134) beds. The organization has approximately four hundred (400) employees.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Supervising Psychologist is responsible for providing individual and group supervision to post-doctoral, intern, and practicum level psychology trainees. The Supervising Psychologist will also assist with individual and group therapy, family therapy, psychological testing (as needed) and case management services to an adolescent and adult population. Documentation on all services provided must be submitted within 24-hours of service delivery. Clinical staff participates in all meetings and supervision activities. The Supervising Psychologist will also assist with any other projects as indicated by the Director of Psychology and Social Services, such as program development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Supervision of Psychology Trainees: Provide structured individual and group supervision to postdoctoral fellows, doctoral interns, and practicum students working on the inpatient psychiatric units. Supervision includes clinical case consultation, professional development, crisis management, documentation review, and adherence to legal/ethical standards.
- Direct Clinical Services: Deliver evidence-based individual therapy, group therapy, and family interventions to adolescents and adults experiencing acute psychiatric distress, including those with severe mood disorders, psychosis, trauma, and co-occurring conditions on an as needed basis for the psychology department.
- Crisis and Case Management: Provide support during psychiatric crises, participate in risk assessments as needed, coordinate with treatment teams, and assist in planning for continuing care.
- Psychological Testing and Assessment: Supervise or administer (as needed) the administration of psychological and cognitive assessments to support differential diagnosis, treatment planning, and capacity evaluations. Prepare clear, timely reports with recommendations tailored to the inpatient setting.
- Documentation and Compliance: Ensure all services—including clinical notes, progress updates, supervision records, and assessments—are documented accurately and submitted within compliance with hospital, state, and accreditation standards.
- Team Collaboration: Actively participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, treatment planning, and case conferences to support integrated, trauma-informed care.
- Training Program Involvement: Contribute to the psychology training program by evaluating trainee performance, participating in intern selection, facilitating didactics, and maintaining compliance with APA and APPIC standards.
- Program and Quality Improvement: Collaborate with the Director of Psychology and Social Services on hospital initiatives, including program development, outcome measurement, staff training, and performance improvement projects aligned with patient care priorities.
- Exercises good judgment by objectively and unemotionally analyzing facts, weighing evidence, utilizing clinical skills and reaching sound conclusions.
- Performs other additional tasks as directed.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Inpatient Clinical Competence: Advanced skills in managing acute psychiatric symptoms, chronic and severe mental illness, crisis de-escalation, risk assessment, and short-term treatment interventions appropriate for high-acuity, inpatient settings.
- Supervisory Acumen: Expertise in clinical supervision within a hospital context, including modeling effective therapeutic approaches, managing parallel processes, supporting trainee wellness, and ensuring ethical practice.
- Assessment Proficiency: Strong knowledge of psychological instruments relevant to inpatient care (e.g., cognitive, personality, diagnostic tools), and ability to formulate differential diagnoses and inform team-based treatment planning.
- Interdisciplinary Communication: Ability to collaborate effectively with psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and other staff; clearly communicate clinical concerns, risk factors, and treatment goals across disciplines.
- Documentation and Accountability: High level of attention to detail and organization to ensure timely, accurate charting that meets legal, clinical, and billing standards.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATES
- Doctorate Degree in Psychology (Psy.D. or Ph.D.) from an accredited university. Completion of an APA accredited internship is strongly preferred.
- Licensed Psy.D. or Ph.D. in good standing in the state of California
- Appropriate continuing education credits to supervise doctoral psychology students
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
- Clinical Experience: Minimum of two (2) years post-doctoral experience providing direct psychological services in an inpatient, acute psychiatric, or hospital-based setting. Must demonstrate advanced skill in treating individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, co-occurring disorders, and crisis-related presentations.
- Supervisory Experience: At least one (1) year of experience supervising psychology trainees (practicum students, interns, or postdocs) in a clinical setting. Familiarity with APA and APPIC supervision guidelines and training requirements preferred.
- Assessment Training: Proficiency in psychological testing, including cognitive, diagnostic, and personality assessments. Experience writing integrated reports and providing clinical recommendations in a multidisciplinary context.
- Knowledge Base: Strong working knowledge of DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria, evidence-based interventions for acute psychiatric care, trauma-informed care principles, and hospital safety protocols.
- Team-Based Care: Demonstrated ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams including psychiatry, nursing, social work, and OT services. Experience participating in treatment planning, discharge coordination, and systems-level collaboration.
- Cultural and Ethical Competence: Commitment to culturally responsive and legally compliant clinical care and supervision. Demonstrates knowledge of relevant legal and ethical standards
- Communication and Documentation: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong documentation skills with the ability to meet hospital clinical charting requirements using electronic health records (Netsmart & Clinitrak).
REQUIREMENTS
- Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and Community Care Licensing (CCL) background clearance.
- Valid California Driver’s license.
- TB clearance.
- Driving record acceptable for coverage by Gateways insurance carrier.
