The goal of every teacher at the Falcon Academy is to inspire and nurture students to learn academic skills and subject matter that contribute to their development as mature, able, responsible, and knowledgeable young people. To promote this, teachers employ challenging curricula and set high standards of achievement and behavior for themselves and their students. The teacher will lead the planning and implementation of a cohesive and coordinated strategy that harnesses every available resource to optimize student learning and the quality of the student experience at Falcon Academy within the learning community. We are pursuing a full continuum school IB (International Baccalaureate) World School with a Diploma Program, Middle years Program, and Primary Years Program. The teacher will have classroom experience in a K-8thgrade school setting, a keen interest in forwarding innovative teaching strategies that align with the vision for the school, and a passion for the unique mission of the Falcon Academy.
Falcon Academy teachers are expected to continue their professional growth by identifying specific goals and pursuing them throughout the year. These goals may include maintaining a valid teaching credential with standards equal to and/or greater than those of the states of Virginia or other nearby states. Teachers are also encouraged to pursue graduate studies in the field of education. Teachers are expected to attend professional seminars or workshops including school provided activities. The Academy strongly encourages membership in professional organizations and participation in professional enrichment opportunities.
As a key member of the student support team, the School Counselor plays a vital role in nurturing the personal, academic, social, and emotional development of all students. The Counselor supports a safe, inclusive, and supportive school climate by offering guidance services, facilitating proactive programs, and collaborating with staff, families, and external agencies when necessary. The Counselor works under the direction of the Principal and in collaboration with teachers and school leadership to ensure the wellbeing and holistic development of every learner.
Key Responsibilities:
- Student Support and Wellbeing
- Provide individual and group counseling to support students in managing emotional, behavioral, academic, and social challenges.
- Monitor student wellbeing and act promptly to provide early intervention or referral.
- Promote mental health awareness through workshops, initiatives, and resources.
- Academic Guidance
- Support students in setting academic goals, improving study habits, and developing time management and organizational skills.
- Collaborate with teachers to design and implement academic support strategies for struggling students.
- Participate in student progress reviews and help develop personalized academic plans when needed.
- Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
- Deliver or support the implementation of a structured SEL curriculum across grade levels aligned with the development of ATL skills.
- Lead workshops and activities that develop empathy, resilience, conflict resolution, and other life skills.
- Foster a respectful and inclusive environment by promoting values of tolerance and kindness.
- Crisis Intervention and Safeguarding
- Respond to student crises in a timely, sensitive, and effective manner.
- Adhere to the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies.
- Maintain confidentiality, while following all reporting protocols when student safety is at risk.
- Parent and Family Engagement
- Serve as a liaison between school and home to support student development.
- Provide families with resources and referrals for external support services when appropriate.
- Offer parent workshops or seminars on topics relevant to child development and wellbeing.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with teachers, administrators, and the Learning Support team to create a cohesive support system for students.
- Attend staff meetings, student support meetings, and professional development sessions.
- Maintain clear records and documentation in accordance with ethical and legal standards.
- College and Career Readiness (as applicable)
- Guide students in career exploration and decision-making.
- Assist students in planning for post-secondary pathways, including vocational programs, college applications, and scholarship opportunities.
- Professional Conduct and Development
- Stay current with best practices in school counseling, psychology, and education.
- Engage in ongoing professional learning and reflective practice.
- Uphold ethical standards as set by recognized counseling associations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or a related field (required)
- Master’s degree in School Counseling or equivalent (strongly preferred)
- Previous school-based counseling experience preferred
- Certification (where applicable)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and sound judgment
