Job Summary:
We are currently seeking a qualified and compassionate Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSYL) to provide comprehensive mental health services to incarcerated individuals at a correctional facility in Madera, California. The psychologist will play a crucial role in assessing, diagnosing, and treating mentally ill inmates, while ensuring safety, confidentiality, and ethical standards in a correctional environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Senior Psychologist and/or Chief of Mental Health, duties include but are not limited to:
Clinical Duties
- Serve as Clinician-of-the-Day during scheduled workdays for patient emergencies.
- Conduct initial mental health evaluations, including psychological, substance abuse, and criminal history assessments.
- Perform suicide risk evaluations, including documentation and adherence to risk protocols.
- Provide crisis interventions, group therapy, and face-to-face interviews (including at cell fronts and in tiered housing).
- Perform Mental Status Exams (MSE) during clinical interviews.
- Diagnose psychiatric disorders using recognized criteria and formulate individualized treatment plans.
- Use standardized psychological assessments appropriately and interpret results accurately.
- Document all care provided using SOAP(E) format, including Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (IDTT) notes.
- Maintain mental health records per institutional policies and standards.
- Deliver care using ethical, evidence-based psychological treatment modalities.
- Participate in IDTT meetings and case consultations with other healthcare staff.
- Examine prior mental health, court, and institutional records to assist with diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning.
- Provide written reports and consultation for the Board of Prison Hearings or other institutional authorities.
Administrative & Program Support
- Analyze mental health program data and audit results for compliance and quality improvement.
- Assist support staff with data input related to appointments, no-shows, and clinical documentation.
- Provide mental health education and develop resources for inmates, including sex offenders.
- Offer assistance to inmates in applying for SSI and connecting with community mental health services.
- Help develop and implement new therapeutic or rehabilitative programs as needed.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies (as approved by the supervisor).
- Participate in departmental meetings and represent mental health services at formal/informal settings.
- Provide caregiver/family communication with appropriate patient consent.
Security & Compliance
- Supervise and maintain order among inmates to ensure safety and prevent incidents.
- Comprehend and follow all institutional, legal, and ethical mandates, including confidentiality and mandated reporting (child/elder abuse, Tarasoff, etc.).
- Adhere to California prison policies regarding patient privacy and medical record documentation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience in correctional mental health, forensic psychology, or similar clinical environments preferred
- Strong clinical, diagnostic, and documentation skills
- Ability to work independently in a high-security setting
- Familiarity with mental health laws, HIPAA, and mandated reporting requirements in California
