JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Summary:
The Surgery Counselor (SC) is primarily responsible for ensuring the patient understands the surgical process; concisely explaining all the necessary appointments and tests required prior to, and after cataract surgery. The SC will schedule all phone-in requests for cataract consultations, and mail out informational brochures to the patient. The SC will greet the patient when they arrive for the consult and explain the needed appointments. After the consultation, the SC will again meet with the patient and schedule surgery and coinciding appointments, including additional advanced diagnostic testing appointments. In addition, the SC will explain both standard and elective options along with possible out-of-pocket expenses, including insurance co-pays. Once the surgeon has chosen the best lens and surgical technique, the SC will discuss the recommended choice(s) and finalize the patient’s decision for the IOL lens upgrade; attain any final signatures on forms needed; and collect any out-of-pocket expense(s). Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations. Coordinates information provided for business services functions including CPT-10 and ICD-10 coding. Responsible for demonstrating high-level of customer service through Head+Heart, Together behaviors.
Work Schedule:
Fulltime 1.0 FTE. Monday - Friday Days.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
High school graduate with 2 or more years related experience in an Ophthalmic and or health care environment.
Special Knowledge/Skills/Certification/Licenses:
Detail oriented individual able to build a rapport with patients and have the ability to explain various appointments and scenarios efficiently. Must be comfortable discussing various pricing structures. Should be able to put anxious patients at ease. Must have strong computer and organizational skills. Medical terminology and CPT-10 coding knowledge required.
